Any options or advice on this situation?

Horses on private yard with me owning 5, one person owning 2 and one other person owning one that is older. This older horse has had a cough for months, owner been told yet doesn’t seem to care including when it had a snotty nose and coughing up both mucas and feed/hay - the mucas was only for 2 days, said she would get a vet and never did

Now one of my horses has started the same cough since Wednesday, including while riding today and one other started snorting while in trot. There are 6 horses in the same field (no way to separate due to layout etc and the one with the original cough is stabled next to the one snorting)

This cough only happens in a morning both before haynet given and while eating then tends to stop both with the original horse and now mine - anyone have any ideas what this could be?

I’ve spoken to this other owner today (after months of already telling her) obviously starting that this cough is now affecting my young fit horses and of course, she gets all defensive and doesn’t seem to actually care. She has said she’ll get a vet this week but who knows if that will actually happen but I’m being made out to be the bad person for thinking of the welfare of all the horses on the yard.

What are everyone’s opinions on this and does anyone have any ideas about the cough?

They are on different hay from different suppliers and have tried it wet for mine but no difference. Bed is chopped straw and been on it for years with no problem and full muck out done everyday other than this older horse which is only skipped out during the week, bed not thick enough fur deep litter. Nothing new on the yard/fields etc

What is your horse's temperature?
TBH if the other one has been coughing for months then I doubt very much that is has only just passed it on to yours so it sounds more likely to be a management, unless one of yours or the other 2 have picked up something new from an outing?

Friend's horse got flu from going to a big show. Even though was fully vaccinated. He went downhill quickly. But yes check your horses temperature. See the vet is coming whuch is good.

No temperature on any of the horses but the owner of the older one has refused to do it for hers 🤷‍♀️

The cough on this horse comes and goes and is not vaccinated for flu - yes she has been told but will not listen. All the other horses bar one go out and mine that has now started coughing hasn’t been out in a month so are of course fully vaccinated including the strangles one.

Temperature on all is all perfect other than the older coughing one as owner refused and it is not flu vaccinated. None got to big shows, either go for lessons where arena is away from stables or smaller comps so there is always a chance of catching something.

Sounds like one of the others has brought a virus back in then. I highly doubt it is linked to the older horse coughing.

I’m with The Mule on this, if the old horse has had issues for a while then it’s unlikely to be the cause of the rest of horses starting.

So you have 2 issues. Management of the old horse …. That’s between the YO/YM and the livery

Something (virus?) new that’s come onto the yards. It happens. I’d run bloods and reduce/stop work if they are feeling a bit grotty.
