Wings has got to be on box rest for 10 days after he had a swollen hock, so he didn't gallop around on the hard ground and do more damage. He also gets 1 sachet of bute a day. He gets out every 2 days for a 30 minute ride/lunge. Now, he has taken to box walking/damaging his stable, and generally stressing himself while being in. He always has hay, but the majority of the time, if he sees another horse, or something else catches his eye, he completely ignores the hay and goes crazy!! He's only been in since Friday, and has already gone mad.

I took him out today to lunge him (have exams soon, so don't want to risk breaking myself), and it took him about 10 mins of galloping around, being stupid, before he eventually settled down and went nicely. I put side reins on him, which did help, as it made him more focused. When he was going crazy though, it was like, he would start to calm down, notice something, and then bolt off crazily!! Luckily, he didn't seem to damage himself anymore, and I gave him his bute once he had cooled down rather than this afternoon.

So, does anyone have any ideas how to stop him stressing in the stable, and going crazy on the lunge? He is on maximum dose of Magic, but it doesn't seem to be helping much.

Thanks :D

Sedalin needs about 45 mins to work but dont have to give very much. Mine's on box rest due to laminitis the worst part of the day is am when the stabled horses go to the field so give him some 45 mins before this happens and he is fine also seems to calm him for the rest of the day because even hours later when it has worn off he is fine seems to put him in the right mind set for the day:)

What about making a pen in your field the size of his stable so he is able to go out with the others. I had to do this for my pony as she suffers from colic if shes in more then 2 days, worked a treat for me as it meant she could go out with her friends be still be restricted.

I might ask the vet for some Sedalin.

Suffolkangel - he isn't the sort that would do well on individual turn out (as in, not being able to have contact with other horses), and would probably still be crazy, but on hard ground instead of a nice, soft stable, and it's the hard ground that's the problem.

Thanks for the suggestions!

sedalin can be effective for up to 6 hours but you need to give when horse is calm and at a reasonable dose. i would speak to your vet otherwise hell end up damaging himself. i do feel for you.
