Horse crisis

also see this link http://www.rspca.org.uk/media/news/story/-/article/Animal_welfare_at_crisis_point_Oct12

"Meanwhile the number of abandoned and abused horses has soared. With over 600 horses in our care, the cost to the RSPCA is £3.7m for this year." from this link

"a massive 65 per cent increase in the animals abandoned over the last five years as pet owners struggle to make ends meet since the recession began. This equates to a potential 40,000 additional animals requiring care."

please read the whole link for full details, because whilst some/alot of people on here may not agree with all their policies, these animals needed help and the RSPCA was there to help them.

My absolute problem with the RSPCA is that I, in no way support their political stance on hunting and will not, in any form, fund their trial costs against hunts. £6m being the figure quoted last time for 1 court case against a hunt. How much of this crisis money can you guarantee will GO to the animals? While I also appreciate that the regions are effectively independent my experience with help with regards to staffords has been incredibly poor. I do support charities but my money and time goes to charities (stafford welfare as an example) where the money is only for the animals. Not political views. If I had more cash to spare, it would go to something like the Blue Cross, The PDSA, Battersea or Stafford Welfare.

Thanks for the links. There are some lovely horses available for fostering and adoption. ( I really shouldn't have looked !) However, I do have quite a bit of unused equipment I can donate, even if I can't manage to foster. I know a couple of people who regularly foster and rehab RSPCA and WHW horses and really deserve a medal for the work they do.

Its at the point that they should come straight out and say that they are more about lobbying and prosecuting, and have the actual rescue side as "sponsored by" or "in affiliate to" so that we can choose to put our money to the actual rescue (as there are many great charaties that do that work independently) or towards their lobbying and prosecution.
Also their inspectors should be held accountable for chasing "soft" targets, as has recently happened to a friend of mine, at a great deal of cost to herself. I know some of the independent charaties have volunteers who do first recce of situations, weed out cases (laminitic ponies on bare fields type, "blindfolded" horses aka fly masks) where they are cared for but people dont understand what is being done. this could free up inspectors to actually deal with cases that need dealing with, not being pushed to one side (ie Hope the shire, Spindles Farm)
Or is it that they allow certain things to get bad so they can step in, get all the publicity, then all the donations?
