Hey all,

i think my mare has turned depressed :( she wasn't treated very nicely by her previous owner, she lost a lot of weight during the winter but starting to build this all back up now she is out 24/7. she's lost the spark in her eye, glisten in her coat, and just doesn't seem to want to be ridden, groomed, cuddled or anything anymore.

she has started windsucking so the vet is coming up on Monday to do tests on her (ulcers) i have the back and saddle lady coming up also to check her back over.

does anyone else suggest doing anything more for me to help her? ive changed her feeds to bulk her up, the problem is shes such a fizzy stressy mare that the slightest bit of work sweats her up!

any advice would be great :( please no nasty comments

it sounds like a pain issue. One of mine was the same, he lost a ton of weight after a winter break, coat looked awful and just looked completely shut down. I had a vet look at him and she didn't know what the problem was. I had suspected ulcers but scopes scowed he was clear. I sent him into vets hospital and xrays showed cysts on his back and kissing spine. I had been pumping feed and supplements into him but it had no effect until his issues got sorted.

If I was you I'd concentrate on getting a full work up doen to see where the issue is. It mightnt be as simple as getting a back or saddle person out. It might be a deeper issue that needs a better work up.
