Sorry, couldn't resist the title which is half tongue in cheek and half serious!:D

I've a Highland filly who is likely to go over height if she carries on growing the way she is. But an equine over 14.2 is no longer a pony but a horse, isn't it? So, will she then be a Highland horse?

I've never had a lot to do with horses, only ponies, but I've been led to believe they are different to ponies. So, are there any advantages to a "Highland horse" over a "Highland pony", other than size? And for what disciplines are they more suited? How does a big pony compare to a small horse? Given height is around 14.3HH - 15HH, which would you prefer and why?

*sniggers*

Very popular with highlandophiles who have grown too tall for their ponies ;) Friend of mine who is 6ft had an overheight highland as a teenager who she did all the RC type activities with - bit of an xc machine ;)

She will still be a "highland pony" but an over height one which rules out showing. (although I have seen a fair few in ridden classes who I think would be over height if measured officially!)

I doubt she will be any different to any other Highland, other than being an inch or two taller.

Send her to me!! I love overheight natives even if the showing judges don't! Are highlands one of those breeds where they are always called a pony, like a fjord is always called a horse?

I was talking to a friend about welsh Ds and that I like them but would only have a bigger one for height/weight reasons and she said 'yeah but they go all horsey then don't they' which I think means sort of arrogant and less of the sort of character that ponies have. Not sure how true such things are but I kind of know what she meant!

I have one of those! I brought her as a 14'1 Highland pony, for the last year I couldn't understand why she was over weight for her breed etc, I finally measured her to find my little 14'1 was now more like 15hh! Ops.

She is still every bit a Highland pony, and although still passported at 14'1 she is much bigger. Makes no odds to me as I don't show her, but man that's a lot of power in that little horse :-)

A friend of mine owned a pony that was genuinely full of horse DNA. Although he was only around 14hh, both his parents had been racing TBs. Whe he didn't grow as big as them is anyone's guess.

If my highland is anything to go by, he's 16.2 in his head even though he's only 14.2!! I don't think it matters. When your girly grows up you'll have a really super - go anywhere, do anything little horse. Enjoy!

Adding the other posts ... I used to have a pedigree Section D who was every bit of 15.3 with an ego to match!

Question is - does size matter??? ...

My instructor had a 15.2hh highland who was great just like a normal highland but bigger so even cuter in some ways. Was quite strange though after being used to all the normal sized ones she breeds. He frequently used to sit up like a dog in the field. He was sold to someone to do battle reenactment type things.
