I went up to my 6yr old mare cob to catch and ride her when I noticed that she was dragging and limping on her lefthand hind leg. After doing a bit of squeezing I realised that the pain was coming from her gaskin, as this is where she is flinching.
I cold hosed it and massaged some arnica gel into after this she seemed to be putting a little more weight on it.
Anyone have an idea of what this could be or the best way to treat it.

Why would I? I'm just trying to get some advice. Why would I need the vet?

Your horse was not fully weightbearing, unless it is due to a foot abscess in which case I would poultice or get the farrier, then that is enough reason to get a vet, a kick may have caused bruising to the gaskin but I would not expect a horse to be so lame if it was just minor bruising, we are not qualified to diagnose and the advice from some experienced posters is to get a vet, you asked for advice and that is freely given with the best interests of the horse in mind.

because if the horse has been kicked and got a hairline fracture it could (note the if and could) make the horse walk exactly how you have described therefore getting a vet is the right answer since none of us can see the horse to advise properly

I don't think it's that because she is walking on it better now and if it was a fracture her condition wouldn't have improved over the last few hours.

My horse had a small fracture, only a splint bone, the vet did not xray as he was improving and walking on it , he then got far worse and ended up requiring an operation and even longer on box rest, if the qualified people get it wrong you cannot assume there is nothing wrong just because they improve is not always a sign there is nothing wrong.

my story was similar to be positives.
My horse got kicked, vet came out and stitched small area, said it was bruising. Advised box rest for a few days then turn out and riding on the same day. The horse was very lame in walk and crippled in trot so I asked the vet to come out immediately and xray as there was no way the horse should be so lame for a 'bruise'. The vet xrayed and said it was a bone chip. Also added that it was lucky the horse hadn't hooned around the field or it could have turned into a catastrophic fracture.

Get your vet out sweetheart.
