HI
i have a horse that has been in my care for 4 years. it was delivered to me by the owner with passport but no agreement of any kind.
i have not been in touch with the owner for over 3 years and am unable to trace them as they moved away and left no contact details. i have spent many hours and much cost as the horse has several health issues.
can i transfer ownership in to my name.

Oh, what an uncertain position you are in, I do feel for you but why would you want to transfer ownership to you? Do you need to make decisions about its future without future repercussions from its owner?

I guess you would need legal advice on this one, assuming you either want to part company with the horse or indeed secure its future with you or another.

For contact details try looking them up on Facebook/Friends Reunited/Bebo/Linked In/whatever else.

As the other replies said what you do does rather depend on what you want and, I'd have said, also on what the original arrangement was... Are you a YO? Was the horse on livery? Were you supposed to ride it? Etc, etc.

Legal advice (or at least the local citizen's advice) definitely a good idea!

Do you know if it's microchipped?

If it is, you can write to the microchipping company and apply for change of ownership - they will write to the owner for permission and, if the owner does not reply within a specified amount of time (not sure how long) the animal is transferred into your name.

Under loan agreements, I think it's 2yrs of no contact where the loaner can transfer ownership. Best to check with an equine solicitor/lawyer.

God, me too......I thought some-one was posting to say their horse had poo-ed on them
