I have a 16.2 ISH event horse who has recently started eating his own droppings!! I first noticed him do it in the school when I got off to pick up his droppings after riding.
Then this morning he took a great big mouthful of poop when I was mucking him out!

I know this means he is lacking something in his diet and wondering if anyone would advise a good multivit supplement.

I don't really agree with codlivine supplements (don't think horses should really eat fish!!)

He currently eats Alpha original and Dodson and Horrell country comp mix. Hi temperament is generally good, although he is rather sharp (in a good way!!)

Any advice appreciated!

My new mare did this soon after she arrived.... I bought a field lick, one of the Himalyan rock salt ones, which she has really enjoyed, and she's been fine since. I was also told it contains natural magnesium, used in calmers, and she has also seemed a little more chilled.

My mare did this after antibiotics upset her gut flora. A few days (literally) of Pink Powder sorted it.

How much exactly does he get fed? Is he getting the recommended amount of mix? If not you may just be better changing him to a balancer rather than adding a vit and min supplement.

As above has said if they do not have enough fibre in their diet it could cause them to eat their droppings, also if he hasnt got enough to munch on he may start to munch on his droppings. If he is out 24/7 it may be worth giving him a bit of hay as he may not be getting enough dry matter from the grass.

And also as somebody else has said make sure your horse ALWAYS has free access to a WHITE salt block especially if he is in exercise and sweats.
