Hi guys i know this is quite far away for me yet.... but i was wondering what kind of events and things i could do with daffy?

in case you dont know shes a 16.1 tb and im 29..

is there a limit or rules on certain things i can do? Like show jumping... and dressage, things like that? does the horse have to meet a certain specification, how the horse stands, looks size etc??? sorry all my questions seem so basic.

Where do you want us to start?

Are you interested in showing (Crufts on horseback) show jumping, dressage, going fast in scenic country (endurance riding) or some club stuff where you can do a bit of most things?

There is also a new 'event training' orientated riding club starting up round here www.rfyrc.org.uk catering for all ages...

Hi...I didn't see you utube debute yesterday cos I was at work and couldnt view it.

You could do anything you wanted to do with your horse...juyst depends what you/she like doing and are good at.

Dressage/show jumping/eventing.....16.1hh horse and a 29 yo bloke is a fair combo....

You could also do showing, depending on your horses type...in-hand or ridden ex-racer classes, show hunter etc- again it really depends on your horse.

hacking...I love it, getting out and about and obvioulsy you need to school/train for whatever you wish to compete in.

Join a riding club- most do shows and clinics and arrange for trainers to come in for help and demos.

Loads of stuff you can do....you just need to get to know your horse and find out what shes good at, and take mit from there.

Good luck.

She will be fine for pretty much anything you want to do with her.......The only limitations would be for things like certain showing classes, which you havent expressed an interest in.

Some shows have classes specifiaclly for juniors, but also adult novices, so you should be ok on that front!!

Probably wont be out competeing for a while tho eh?? LOL

Hi again Jordon,

Glad you are back and wasn't scared off!

You will have to give us another video of you riding Daffy (when you two are sorted) and we can see how you go, then we can point you in the right direction of what you could be good at.

This could get interesting!

Haven't seen pics of your girl but the sky is the limit really
Have a go at lots of different classes and decide what you both like doing the best.
I always started my horses in hand, to find out how they are going to cope at shows and puts less pressure on as you don't have to do any riding to start with.
Oh the joys of tack cleaning and plaiting (I miss it soooooooooo much NOT)

Morning Jordan. Oh, you are so like me, I had all these thoughts going through my head when I got mine. Best thing to do is to slow things right down, do lots of bonding, lots of groundwork. Get your mounting issues sorted and enjoy some hacking and lessons and then take it from there. I had all these thoughts of dressage and showing in the beginning and after 3 years am a happy hacker with no inclination whatsoever to do anything else. You have a lifetime ahead of you with Daffi so no need to try to do lots at once. xx

I quite fancy show jumping! when i had inky on loan ( when i was alot younger) I used to jump him in the paddock across all kinds of small to large jumps i made up myself.... he was great and the feeling going over them was exciting... so i think if she is capable of that...then id love to try it... like i said it is a long way off yet! But i see myself flying across big jumps on daffi... the only thing probably flying will be! str8 off her ! LOL!!! x

Hi Jordan,

I read your first post last night and I haven't laughed so hard in ages - your video was inspired - I have bookmarked it

Daffi is lovely and seems very sweet, you obviously adore her already.

You should join a local riding club and participate in their lessons and rallies - this is a good way to meet horsey people and get some help in bonding with her.
I've had my new horse Tara about 9 months and I try to have a lesson every week.

A riding club will run small competitions too so that eventually you will be able to try your hand at lots of different things.

Good luck - will be watching out for your posts xx

Hiya Jordan,

I would suggest joining a local riding club. They are always very helpful and knowledgeable and can get you started.

Daffi is lovely and I'm sure she'd be fab in the show ring. This includes making sure she is in tip top condition, turned out well and has good confirmation. It's kind of like Crufts!

Dressage is my favourite event. It is to show off your horses movement and riding, however there are easier tests such as Intro which are just walk and trot, or Prelimininary which are basic riding skills. You'd probably be best to start at Dressage.

Show-jumping is over a course of bright poles and fillers, so your horse has to be pretty used to 'scary'(!) sights. The courses differ in height, but someone will be able to point you to the correct class heights to enter.

Cross-Country is very challenging and you may not be attempting this just yet :p
It is very fast paced, over rustic fences like fallen logs and wooden obstacles. Horse have to be very fit.

Eventing is a combination of the 3 above events.

Endurance is like hacking at a faster pace. It varies in distance and speeds, but again, if you wanted to have a go, someone from a local riding clubs should be able to help you.

Non-competitive events such as hacking and schooling/lessons and clinics are the best place to start.

Here are some riding clubs in Lancashire:

Agree! But you could join a local riding club in the meantime...Rochdale, Bolton, Oldham etc x

Take a trip down to a local show...Rochdale is the 2nd weekend in every month from April to Sept...google their website. Have a look and see what appeals to you.

Daffi is lovely by the way, real sweety pie x

There is tonnes on in the Lancs area, did you say you were Chorley way?

Myerscough are now running some combined training, dressage and SJ comps, not too far for you. There is Barton EC, Osbaldeston, Broomhill, Church Farm then all your local RC shows

I also have a 16.1 tb mare who I love to bits. We play out, lots! Trips to Somerford Farm ride and Cross Country courses, you can always PM when you are ready if Daffi needs a nanny

And then there are Horsecamps which are great fun! I took Ruby to her first one in March this year, it was fabulous! http://www.activerider.co.uk/

Jordan, ribble valley rc is probably near for you and Bolton & District too, I am over the other side of Rivington from you at Heath Charnock so not far away.

Loved your video last night.lol. Saw how many posts there were and had to have a peek to see what all the fuss was about! Looks like you have embarked upon a very steep learning curve, my friends bought a five year old appaloosa as their first horse last year, they were novices, they sold it and now have a coloured traditional cob, the horse just got the better of them completely, we persevered with it and for someone experienced it would have been fine, but it and they were not a good combination and they became scared of it.

Glad you've decided to get some help from the start as things can so easily go downhill.

Ribble Valley show has working hunter (plain wooden fences) but they dont have showjumps.

Not sure about Bolton & District, there's Coppull show too, Leyland & District its proper name, they have showjumping starting from very low fences, its a very small show but sometimes busy, but a good place to start I think, and they have qualifiers so something to aim for when you're ready for that bit more.
