Horse facial hair

Hello everyone. Wondered if anyone might know why the hair on my horse's face has gone all patchy and fine. His body hair is unaffected but on his face it is all a bit mangy - and it does not appear to be from anything rubbing as a lot of it is in places that neither the headcollar/bridle nor horse could rub. Any ideas? Starting to look a bit manky now and noone wants that for their handsome horse!

one of mine gets like that every time her coat changes, ie summer, winter. i put on wonder gel as it has hair growth properties in, works very well and after a week or 2 the hair is regrown
