This is on behalf of a friend, anyone who can help? Put it in this section in the hope more people would see it.

Has anyone had any experience of horse having a fit - literally the throwing themselves over backward uncontrollable type....and I don't mean naughty horse having a paddy type!

Horse is 13 yrs old, never happened before and the vets aren't very hopeful they will find a diagnosis, apparently 99% never happen again and remain undiagnosed!!

He seems ok now ....by the time vet got there about mins later his heart rate was perfectly normal.

Friend was trapped in the stable very scared!! Poor Harley came down so hard on his back and hit his head and neck in the corner of the stable, she seriously thought he was going to break his neck & kill himself!!!

Any info would be much appreciated!

Sorry, can't help, but that sounds awful! Must have been terrifying for your friend

I'd suggest a neurological specialist to check him over, it could be a tumour...........hope not, but I have heard of this before......sorry.........

My pony has equine Epilepsy so yes i have alot of experience with horse having fits.
willie the bay in my siggy has now had know Epilepsy for 6 yrs.
His first fit was when he was 19 up until then he was a happy health jumping pony who was out competing every weekend you would of never know his age!
the first fit was in the middle of a main road, it was very very scary.

If you want i can tell you willies whole story but be warned its long but might be intresting to sameone that wants to know about fits or Epilepsy!?!

I have to say willie did get worse over time but at the moment has not had a know fit in a year. Our vet did not know anything about equine Epilepsy. i had to write to a liverpool uni to get it info.

I will try and anwser any of your Questains and if you want I will tell you willie story!

my old horse also had an equne epileptic fit when I was out hacking - started to shake, stagger, throw himself on the floor and d**n scary. Lasted about 15 mins and then I managed to lead him back to his stable and the vet arrived (dog walker had gone to the yard and phoned vet for me so he was there almost immediately)

afterwards it was as if nothing had happened and I was lucky - my old boy never had another fit in his remaining 2 years (and his first fit was at 17 and he'd never had a days illness in his life).

Vet said same as your vet - horse will either have more fits - or never have one again

Let's hope your friends horse is the same as mine and has no further trouble

If the fits get progressively more violent or there are other symptoms, such as standing with head pressed against the wall of the stable, I'd start to worry about a tumour and get a full examination done.
