Has anyone found a sure-fire way of discouraging these blasted things? I have a new black horse this summer and he seems to be particularly affected by the things. They hang round him in clouds.

Is this a particularly bad year or is it just his colour? My bay horse is affected but not as much.

I personnaly think it depends on the breeding, I have to welsh ponies that are never bothered/ very rarely bitten but my thourghbreed and dutch warmblood really suffer with the little b****rds!

I heard about Avon skin so soft on here, been using it for about a week, works a treat!

Same here..when I ride out with my daughter you can guarantee my TB gets attacked by swarms of them but the Highland they seem to leave well alone..

Ooooh same here blo**y TB gets them all whilst my Welsh ambles along not bothered at all

TB has Coopers Fly repellent on every time we go out during the summer, damned expensive but seems to do the trick

the horse that gets it worse is a Welsh Sect D but he is black and we wondered if that was the reason.
I am feeding him garlic in the hope that will have some effect.
I thought H flies were only around during May/June but a website said may/Sept. It is only the females that bite. The males drink nectar.
