Horse fly bite at this time of year?

Big lad came in this morning and i would say has a "horse fly bite" it has a depressed centre and what i would say is two puncture wounds or one rather large one it has a huge swelling in an egg shape, which is warm and obviously itchy when being bathed - but really October and horse fly's ? or could it be the dying last of a wasp? or maybe he's been bitten by one of those huge spiders that my oh keeps saying are his pets (ie not allowed to squash, or drown).

Its on the inside of his leg just above the hock and no apparant lamness but looks like a walk lesson, or a posture lesson this afternoon as i hate to cancel my instructor who works like an idiot to fit me in to her manic life !

ideas anyone?

At first read i would say = yes - Flies are still bothering my girl every other day or so (She is super sensitive to the blighters!)

But the 'Puncture wounds' being so obvious and two of them being close sounds a little odd? Maybe two bites close??

Your post has made me think, Che was a complete pain this morning for the last mile of our hack. He is normally very good but he was fly jumping and kicking out behind, at one point he shook himself all over which was really horrid, I felt quite unseated by it and when we got back to the yard he was desperate to scratch his head and his knee! I did wonder if hed been bitten by something but I cant find any marks on him, Ill check again later, maybe something will have come up by then. There was no obvious cause of him behaving like this, have to say, the traffic was giving me a very wide berth so he must have looked fairly spectacular from behind!!!
