Horse flies... do they bite at night?

This morning I woke up with a painful lump on the outside of my calf, over the course of the day it's started throbbing a little. It's about 3.5" high and 2.5" wide. It's now bruised in that area where it was originally red. Having never been bitten by one I have no idea but this os what someone suggested, however I thought that they 'cut' rather than stung like a gnat, and there doesn't seem to be any sign of it....

Someone else said bot fly eeek....any ideas?

i was bitten this week by a horse fly

bit huge sore lump size of half a tennis ball , itching like hell

swelling went down in 2-3 days and left huge bruise where skin had been stretched

Gnats don't sting hun, they bite. Only wasps, bees, hornets have a stinger. Most insects that hang round horses bite. It's the action of the insect pumping digestive juices and/or anticoagulants into your flesh that kick starts the body's defences and you get itchiness and redness. Horse flies don't fly at night - you probably got the bite earlier in the day but your body's response to it took a few hours to develop. Keep an eye on it because if you have a severe reaction to it you might need to see a doctor.

Thanks you two.

Box of Frogs-I'm a nob lol I don'y know why but I always assumed it was a sting...but of course it'll be a bite-they're effectively feeding aren't they? duh!

It's really darkened to quite an angry purple now, but I can see no sign of a bite or anything. There's a tiny dot, but with it being on my leg and swollen I'm not convinced it's nothing more than a stretched pore-we do have pores on our legs,no? Well, where a hair would have been had I not shaved them iykwim? It doesn't itch but throbs and actually making the top of my foot and ankle hurt, despite being nearer my knee. I'm thinking of popping in to the minor injuries/drop in centre tomorrow morning?

I've taken a couple of ibuprofen but do you think an antihistamine may relieve it a little?

I had a massive reaction to a horse fly bite last week and now have an arm that whilst back to normal size is covered in small scabs where i came out in blisters all down my arms.
My arm swelled up, when bright red, was very hot to touch and itched like mad.
Antihistamines are the way forward!
