I have 2 horses that live out, my mare in particular is really struggling with the flies even with a full fly rug and mask on. They have garlic in their feed and a bit of marmite to help keep the flies away but she is still getting very wound up. Shes even more unhappy stabled. Has anyone got any ideas of what else i could feed her or do to help her? As soon as i can they will be both coming in during the hottest parts of the day. Thanks in advance!

Absorbine ultrashield. In the UK only licenced as premises spray, however in the states it is a fly spray. We have been using it for 3 years and works a treat. I don't think with horseflies you'll ever get a 100% but we see a minimal amount. out hacking over the last few weeks if we had one horseflie or other flying bug in 90 minutes it was alot. we even came across other people hacking being stung to dead.
Our big boy lives out with out a flyrug, only because we have not been able to find anything that fits. but we rarely fine a horse fly on him. they try it but don't dare land. Horseflies are able to sting trough some flyrugs.
Or have you checked H-ball. expensive but does work!

I hope it's the answer for you to Joyous70! My boy was until this past week, being bitten quite badly (especially on his neck/shoulder/sheath areas) and there's definitely a significant decrease in bites and all the past bites are now decreasing in size and are alot less swollen.

I'm hoping I've at last found the answer to keeping the horseflies at bay!

£35 a tin for 250mls of the stuff, but if it works (which it certainly seems to be doing), it's money well spent in my eyes :)

Thank you - yes fingers crossed, mind if i have worked it out properly, then 250mls should do 25 applications of 10ml to make 500ml which equates to approx £1.35 once a month, if im only using it for summer/spring months then a tin could potentially last me over 2 years so in that respect very inexpensive.

Absolutely....so in effect it's damn good value for money if used 'as it says on the tin'!

Just something to bear in mind though, after rainfall or a hosing down/bath,...you'll need to re-apply.

yes, thank you, she does tend to get hosed/sponged down a lot at this time of year, so i will keep this in mind.
