Say you saw a horse that was 1k/£800 roughly over your budget would you still enquire about horse or not bother for fear of offending seller. How much would you expect the seller to reasonably drop? As a rule of thumb would it be about £500?

I think it depends on the asking price, wanting £1k off a horse costing £2k might be pushing it a bit, but if the horse was £10k it might be less cheeky!
Mason was £3500, I initially offered £2800, and was turned down, so offered £3k and was accepted.
Also depends on the owner, if home is more important than price, then if you are right for the horse, they may well be prepared to drop. Many owners will just want the best for their horse.
Ultimately, if you don't ask, you don't get!

If it was above £5000 then you may get a £800-1000 drop if they've had it on the market for ages. Generally you can tell how much they'd drop - ie, £1350 would normally drop £50 without any hastle, and would probably drop to £1200 if pushed. £3250 would probably drop to £3000...

Heard of someone down the yard who recently got well over £1k off a £4k horse.

Personally for a horse in the sort of £3-£5k bracket I think you'd be unlikely to get more than a grand off, but £500 should be realistic.

Depends on how well priced the horse is though and what the market is like in your area.

I got £500 off a £4900 horse, and sweet FA off a £4k horse! Depends how quickly people want to get rid of them tbh... the owner who gave me money off has had lots of £ from me since anyway!

I frequently see horses readvertised for a lot less than the original asking price, so some people are prepared to take a lot less at least at some point. If the horse has been on the market for a while, the owner needs to sell they may drop the price. But - it may be hard to get the timing right, and if you wait too long the horse may be sold :-)

My mare was priced at £2500. She was very slightly nappy on the second viewing, the seller was mortified, I decided that I still liked her and bought her for £1500. She passed a 5* vetting and it was when the horse market was buoyent.

It really depends on the individual circumstances, what the other viewers/callers have been like etc...
