Horse free to good home... tempted!

Saw a horse advertised free to good home.

16.1hh TB, ex-racehorse, early-mid 20's, out of work at the moment, lives out in summer and in at night in winter, suit hacking home, safe to ride, good with farrier, owner 'selling' due to loss of grazing.

I am tempted! Horse is located about 20 mins from me!

Don't let heart rule head, here. I was given a horse last year and it turned horribly sour - I had to move from my grazing shortly after, loaned him out, THEN discovered a serious condition through a previous owner that I found by chance. The loaner was not impressed and even threatened me with court to recoup costs, after believing that I lied. It's not worth the heartache, so even with a free horse, I would now always have a vetting.

I think if you are experienced and genuinely could give him a loving & caring home then go get him. BUT please take into account what you are taking on.

Do you have grazing, finances & time to give to him. Also be aware of his age as he could have some problems.

It's not always dodgey when some one offers something for free, but remember this is a living breathing animal and needs your attention every day for the rest of his life as well as financial commitment

Yours might be OK but beware the free horse. My son was given a horse by his riding instructor . . . . 16.3 TBxWB, 10 years old, been there, done it, XC, SJ - the lot. Had been out on loan but, usual story, the loaner had "broken" him and returned him with a strained tendon. This had now healed provided he didn't do huge amounts of work. Ideal for my son as he didn't have the time to do huge amounts of work. Well, the horse proved unrideable, napped for England, had NO manners and reared. On having a chat with owner, it turned out that he also had a back problem (never defined) and not to worry about the rearing as hewouldn't be able to go too high as "his hocks won't take it"!!!! We returned him p.d.q. . . . . .
