My 23yr old horse has been cast twice in the last fortnight and this only happened once before years ago, so to put it into context three times in 16 years.
I have always had a large shavings bed with about 6 inch depth and banks which are probably 3 ft in height and she is currently on week 8 of a 12-16 week box rest plan with controlled exercise of 20m once a day.
I think she's getting bored and digging her banks. She isn't eating her hay much during the day so no chance to elleviate boredom by giving her extra hay.
The girl who ' rescued'her on Friday after she got cast, along with another girl is guessing that she is pulling out the bank until she has a mound behind her and then going down to roll and the unable to roll over to right herself due to the mound in her way.
I'm worried that taking out the banks will cause more issues then it will solve because the back wall is brick and I'm worried she will hurt herself if there is no bank. Plus the banks have never been as issue previously. The first time she was cast was at the front of the stable so no bank.
I don't seem to be able to win in this situation.
Her stable is 14 x 12, rubber matted. I don't think she is restricted in her rugs but I am going to rug her neckless for a while (she has issues with her neck) in case this is why. She isnt struggling to rise in normal circumstances (due to her age I monitor this closely).
