mabey slight exaggeration but it IS a drama queen.....

pampered princess is currently on Gastrogard for ulcers, however has taken to becoming bargy again, doing a wall of death and freaking out when shes brought in from the field (shes one of the last in which is good if she was first it would climb the walls)

So...possible issue is lack of work (shes on a simple systems feed and hay so i know its not her feed)... she loves being asked to work/even trick training/clicker training and last time it took a month for her to become a cow from no work.

I wanted to not work her until the end of May to let her ulcers settle down - shes fine in the field but becomes incredibly stressed in the stable....??

Theres no option at the moment of 24/7 turnout, but i dont see why this is the issue anyhow as shes only turned like this over the past few days (shes been off work for 9 days!)

Do i put her on a calmer???
work her?? (id rather not but will if it wont affect her ulcers?)

Help!?
 
Poor you and your poor girl...hope she is better/happier soon.

I would love to help but in this case I think I would ask the vet.
 
Could it be the spring flush in the grass? My TB is dolally this week, since I put her into a field with a bit more grass. She was like a fire-breathing dragon this afternoon because it was a bit windy.

I half think i want to bring her back into work but i really dont! i want to give her time off to chill out (ideally living out but cant at the moment - but she needs to learn to chill)!


Would a calmer react with her gastrogard??

Shes not biting which is a good sign!...she does love her work but i dont want to aggrivate her ulcers/stress....its a very nasty circle :(
 
I'm currently goin thro the process of gettin my mare scoped, and my vet has said she can be ridden straight after scoping and whilst on the treatment, tbh for my mare not being in work would make her more stressed which then would not help the whole ulcers gettin better in the first place if anything it would cause more ulcers!!
 
If you would prefer not to ride her (and I can see why, given that 'girthiness' can be a symptom of ulcers), could you do plenty of in-hand work/lunging to keep her mind busy?
 
Can you lead her off another horse I don't think a calmer would affect gastrguard I pretty sure my mare mare was on a calmer and gastrguard at the same time ring your vet and ask.
It might be the spring grass can you bring her in from say ten to five and see if that helps?
My mare loved being lead when I did not want to girth her.
Horses why do we have them ?
 
As some of the others have said, in hand work and maybe ride and lead. Probably better to do light work to keep her brain busy then have her stressing and aggravate her ulcers. Work on your clicker training. Good luck with keeping her sane while she recovers.

im pulling my hair out trying to do whats right but i feel like i cannot do right for doing wrong!

I will lunge her tomorow to see if that has a good effect on her tomorow night - and let her decide the pace etc..

riding wise - she was girthy before she went back to horsepital, but thats because it didnt twig to me it was ulcers flairing again...

I can try lunging her tomorow and if shes okay have a sit on

shes a VERY good horse to tell me "ouch"....i just need to learn to listen to her and read the signs :)
