At my wits end - just moved to new yard - horse really happy and settled quickly - he has now been introduced in to the other horses too and they are fine - trouble is he keeps going through the electric tape overnight - this is happening every night now - the field is divided into 3 paddock - 2 horses in each. Our is huge and other people I moved in with are restricting the grazing as we have loads of grass - we give them plenty - there is more than enough - but he just keeps going though every night - it is electrified too - and put posts up and two strands of tape. Just don't know what to do?

Is he wearing a rug? If he is chances are he's not 'feeling' the current.

Can you stable him overnight? Or have him in a field with permanent fencing?

Our pony kept grazing over the electric fence and was then getting stuck between the two strands as she walked over the bottom one. We turned the electric up to higher power.

I also took her neck off her rug so she would feel it. She was extremely cross for the first morning and hasn't attempted to do it again and has her neck back on.

I was happier for her to be slightly cold than escape or keep getting stuck.

Unfortunately for me I cannot stable him overnight - gone onto grass livery to cut my costs!!!! He is rugged as he is clipped so he probably isn't feeling the zap!!! Think I will take the neck over off though like you did. Might have to put up something a bit more permanent in the way of fenging though. For the last 18 months he has been in similar fields and not attempted this at all. I am not too worried about him being on all the grass currently - its the people I share with (last in I have to do as I am told!!!). But as he is a potential fattie I have to be careful in the summer.

My little fella 18HH CB, walks straight through the tape, but he has his rug on.
And often as Lou23 says gets stuck & stands or just takes the whole lot down.

What you need to do it take his rug off, & you go & poo pick or muck out, make a cuppa.

He needs to touch the tape to learn, i'm off today & will take my boys rug off & he will touch the tape for sure..

Is your fencing on plastic or wooden posts? I had to chhange mine to wooden and I had to have 4 thick strands so it looked like more - now we can manage with three strands. It ws a battle for me, he wasnt even that bothered about being zapped!!

My sister's horse did this even though electric was on. However, I noticed the power was being affected as part was touching some metal hooks (holding the fencing on) on teh wooden posts. After a bit of playing about with it I managed to get the current running properly through and walked away.

Immediately he came over to try lean across again (we had the electric there to stop them leaning over and breaking the fences trying to eat grass on the other side). He got a rather large shock, even I heard the crack! He didn't do it again though - lesson learnt for him.

Maybe sure the current is working properly and the fence isn't touching anything it shouldn't be. I would have thought the horse still shouldbe able to feel the zap through it's rug but if you think not then yes, take the rug off for a bit or at the very least the neck cover. A good zap from the fence ought to be enough to prevent him doing it in future!

My mare loves to be zapped - she used to stand and lean on it until we plugged it into the mains

Can you turn him out without his rug on for an hour so he gets a shock then rug him up again?

If taking the rug off does not work then I would suggest
you check the voltage in the electric fencing. You can buy a voltage checker from tack shops that sell electric fencing. Also make sure that the electric fence posts are no more than 6 feet apart so that the tape is kept taught. The unit may be faulty or the tape is earthing thus reducing charge on the tape..

My mre loves the electric fence and will stand and watch me up it al up and soon as i finish she will walk through it till her front legs are one side and back legs the other then she will just beep reversing till she has pulled the whole lot down.
I have tried everything, putting it onto the mains and leaving her with no rug on and she still just carried on and the OH had gone around the whole field and checked with a metre to make sure the current was going through.
Have just had to give up and only put her in fields with solid fencing or keep her in.
Did read somewhere that horses can get addicted to the shock they get from the fencing, but dont know who true this is

I have had this problem so have resorted to wrapping some elecric tape around the front of the rug inside and outside so when the horse pushs on the tape it touchs the tape on the rug and takes the current direct to the skin. It does help!

sounds nasty but hold some grass on the tape let him eat it he will get a good zap know it is on and then hopefully want bother going through it!
