Called vet out last night to a cut on horse's knee - it looked nasty and Ted could barely stand on his leg and knee was very swollen. It was pitch black in the middle of the field with only headlights to see. He gave it a good flush out and gave him anti-biotics, and he would come back out in the morning. Morning we travelled him 5 mins down the road to the yard so vet had power etc. Walking much better but vet worried gone into the joint. Puncture wound to the knee about 2 1/2inches to the bone :( she said he needs to go to vets for surgery to flush it out properly. He had x rays done at the yard.

Frantic calling around to friends to find someone who can transport him this evening. I cant drive as recovering from broken leg.

No luck so he is booked in first thing tomorrow morning, so out at 6.30 to get him loaded and out to the vets.

Bloody snow has started grrr!

If all goes ok how long do they keep them in hospital and how long on box rest?

He is a 2 year old warmbloodx!

Hot chocolate and rolos on offer in exchange for hugs!

Awh ((hugs))
I know exactly what you are going through, my mare had a kick on her hock several years ago now & I had the mad panic trying to sort out transport etc, & leaving her at the hospital :(
She was kept in for a week, but I could visit daily (she got very depressed & wouldnt really eat much so dropped alot of weight) & they wanted to keep her a bit longer but the weight loss was becoming a bit of an issue, she hates being stabled!
When home she was prescribed 2mths box rest, but after her stitches came out she went in a small paddock to get her eating again, however it was the middle of summer so no mud!
Good luck with his op tomorrow & hope he makes a speedy recovery!
xx

sorry to hear your boy has hurt himself :(

I think in cases where there may be infection / chips to the bone this time is of the essence so lets hope what the vet did the first night has delayed anything bad happening.

My boy has gone back to hospital today as a couple of weeks ago he hurt his fetlock, a very small and insignificant looking wound but down to the bone. He had it flushed, xrayed in case of fracture as we didn't know how he had done it, and was then in for 5 days on IV antibiotics to be on the safe side. He then came home and was on box rest (well, moving around the yard but not in the field hoolying) for a week, then the vet came to check it out and I think in total he was an invalid for about 10 days after the op.

He was doing well, and has been hacked out slowly once, but yesterday the wound was hot, very swollen and had puss coming out of it, so they are xraying again, scanning it, and he's back on the IV antibios - poss for another 5 days.

So, I guess in answer to your original question - they may want to keep him there for the duration of the antibios which could be 5 days, but again it depends on what they find when they examine him.

I do hope it goes well, and that you have him back home soon. x

Aww, Kat I am sorry to hear about Ted :(

Bailey and I are sending big hugs and hope he is getting better as we speak :)

Which vets is he going to? Bailey had a nasty injury when he was 18 months old and Wendover were amazing with him. I think Bailey and Ted must have been in cahoots when together at Fred's :D

Keep us posted about what happens; I'm sure Fred would help if you got stuck and I may be able to lend a hand too :)

Hi all, thanks for the comments.
Didn't sleep at all last night with the worry of everything today. We got to the yard at about 6.45 and had to load him in the dark. Was so proud as he went on after about 5-10 mins. My regular vet referred him to bob baskervilles and have been very impressed with the service I have received. He arrived at the vet at 8.30 and they pretty much started straight on him and he had his op at about 10.30ish.

Wendover couldn't take him unfortunately.

I've had regular calls throughout the day letting me know how he is getting on. He will be staying in for 5 days and he is quite a chilled chap so he will be happy wherever he is.

They are really happy with how it all went and flushed the joint thoroughly. Vet thinks we got it in time. Feel so relieved but know we still have long way to go. Think I will sleep well tonight.
