Anyone had a horse go off horsehage? she is allergic to hay so went onto horsehage 8 weeks ago (the blue high fibre one), she couldnt get enough of it at first but for the last two weeks she wont entertain it, even when she was turned out with no grass and it was on the gate she still wouldnt touch it. I have noticed the smell is different in each bag but even the ones that i think are lovely she is refusing to eat. she is eating grass and her hard food ok. Anyone any ideas or had the same problem?
Someone said try the purple on (timothy grass) but not keen on chopping and changing her food as she has a sensitive stomach.

Is it one particular bag she wont eat? We had a rancid bale of blue horsehage recently, but the other bales have been ok.
Or it may be that as the spring grass is coming through she's not as hungry as before. Even though our fields look bare, the horses are eating the sweet spring grass it as fast as it's growing, so if your fields are the same as ours, she is probably consuming more grass than you think.
With regards to the purple timothy horsehage, I can recommend that. It's quite dry and my horses love it.
I wouldn't feed mine the green horsehage though - that is too wet and too rich.

Mine had a couple of bales to use up of the blue horsehage recently -they turned their noses up at it -don't know why because I always think it smells lovely, and it seems to make a bigger, bulkier haynet than the Ryegrass bale. I think it's because they are used to eating big bale Ryegrass haylage so must have tasted different! in the past i tried them on the timothy hayalge and they wouldn't eat that either! fussy creatures eh!

Mine have been on small bale haylage now for the last couple of months as my supplier ran out i get pallets of it delivered from the farmer in the west country, seems as good or if not better than the horsehage however it is Ryegrass.

Are there some other local makes of small haylage bale near you that you could try out that your horse might like!

Mine scoffed it all winter and the minute the grass started to come through ( even though there didn;t seem to be alot) they went off it. Mine are out 24/7 now and due to lack of rain we don't have an ubundance of grass yet but they are not even interested in their bucket feeds. So I wouldn't really worry too much. Don't waste your money on trying too many different types as she could do the same to all. Maybe just up her chaff to bulk out her hard feed if you are worried she might not be eating enough.
