A week after moving to a new yard my girl has managed to go through electric fencing, a freak accident when she slid. The vets came immediately and it seems that the injuries are superficial though stitching has been required.

She was injected with painkillers and antibiotics for the first two days but has had to have them in paste form today as she is just not interested in her feed. She is nibbling away at hay and haylage but just doesn't want to know whats in her feed bucket, we've tried mollases and polo mints.

I'm not sure if its because she's a bit depressed or the pain or a mixture of everything but wondered if any kind people had any suggestions, I'm going to get the vet to check her teeth tomorrow in the off chance that that could be the problem (teeth were last checked 6 months ago).

Any suggestions would be greatfully appreciated I hate seeing her soooo down.

Try changing your feed bucket....different shape and ask someone else to feed her.... any maybe just put some carrots on their own in the bucket. Worth a try

If she won't at any food that is absolutely not tainted with medication and she normally eats it, then you need to get the vet out sooner rather than later

Only thing I would say apart from agreeing that you should perhaps have a quick chat with the vet is that my friends horse used to refuse food with any medication in it and she used cartons of apple juice to hide the taste and it worked a treat, maybe worth a try!

Best of luck hope she gets well soon

when my horse wouldn't eat (and i mean anything) my vet said it was a pyscological thing because he didn't want his medication, now when he has to have any medication i put about 4 scoops of spearmint in his feed works a treat. i'd just get you're vet to give her a quick once over just incase its anything more sinster.

Thanks for all your replies, I've spoken to the vet about it yesterday and today, I'm allowed to take her out to grass in hand so that she is getting something to keep her gut going, her temperature has been checked to make sure there isn't anything else going on. Thankfully the vets out again tomorrow morning so will discuss it with him again.

i would give her the medication in an apple but a hole in it and put it in there and then put her food in her normall bowl well cleaned so there is no smell of medication and give her her normal diet so she thinks there is noyhing changing!
