The vet has just been out again to my horse, and has diagnosed asthma. He has a selection of medication and will need to use an inhaler daily. The inhaler is on order- one that fits around his nose fully, not one nostril.

Has anyone had any experiences of this, or tips, that they would share, please? Many Thanks :)

Shake the puffer before you squirt the medicine into the inhaler.

Try to avoid riding in a dusty arena or dusty bedding. You can try feeding him from floor level and make sure his feed and hay are damp/soaked.

He'll have good days and bad days, when he's struggling, just don't ride or keep to walk.

Lots of horses hate the inhaler being put on their noses but ventapulmin seems to work really well. Also using hay instead of haylage and feeding from the floor helped as well as making everything wet so soaked hay if not haylage, feeds like soup, as dust free as possible bedding etc. Hope the drugs help your boy :)

My beloved pony as a teenager had asthma. We controlled it well he had inhalers copious tubs of ventipulmin and paper bedding - he worked til he was 18 but due to the regular doses of steroids he had to have to keep him breathing then developed laminitis. We kept him going and he died 2 years later .... He was my soul mate and my only regret about him was that I didn't PTs slightly earlier cos he suffered a lot in those last 2 years. He was very severely asthmatic and needed constant management and he competed more than once at the dressage nationals - so it's not all bad news but it is hard work.
