10 days ago my new horse tangled himself in fencing and has caused lot of damage to his back legs in front of hock.I was very lucky and managed to get him to surgery within 2 hours.Hes stapled stitched and on box rest.Does anyone have any pics to document progress of their horses injuries.The cuts are virtually to bone hes not lame happy in himself now he has companion in during day and is being good patient. Thanks guys
 
My horse did this a few years back, fortunately she did not require surgery but it was a long road to recovery, following a rush recovery admitted by the vet that caused my mare to get cellulitis and ended up in the vets on an IV antibiotic drip and Spa twice a day for 5 days, I do not have any photos on this computer, but will see if I can get to them and show you, in all she had 5 wounds 3 deep none of which could be stiched, recovery was very slow after all this, she dropped a considerable amount of weight, I didn't think I was picking up the same horse from the vets, she was so unhappy, but she has fully healed now, and apart from a few white hairs on the deeper wounds there is hardly any scar and you couldn't point them out without getting down and having a good look at the hock.
But shes my happy hacker/field ornament so it does not change a thing for me :D
 
Thanks :eek: think mines come off lightly after seeing those pics although it was cut to bone all flesh has been stitched or stapled back together.The vets has made several incisions so the skin doesn't tear to release pressure.

My horse has an almost identical injury to yours Cellie. He did his neatly six weeks ago. He was taken to hospital within three hours but they decided not to stitch and pressure bandage instead. This had not been successful and the wound has got progressively wider over the last five weeks. After research on here and friends' experiences I pushed the vet to refer him for cold water hydrotherapy and although he's only been there since Friday, we're already seeing an improvement. It sounds like you're already on the road to recovery with yours but if you can, try hydrotherapy, I think it really helps. Good luck!
 
Thanks everyone stitches couldn't come out this morning . Vet had been on pig farm and my horse definitely picked up smell even though he had showered. Perfect patient grew horns. Wound looks little better. Wish I knew better time scale one vet says 2 months another 4 to 6 !!!! I'll try and load pic as he came in from field.
 
My grey had a horse V fence accident when she was a yearling. Her worst injuries were on her chest (so not over a joint and therefore the skin doesn't need to 'give' as much when she moved) and they were stapled together. After two weeks the staples were able to be removed. She carried on healing for ages but after two months she was pretty much healed up.

ETA, due to the location of your horse's cuts, I would expect them to take more time than my grey needed.
 
It depends I would say about 6 weeks.

I would get some green Fly / Antiseptic cream and put some around the wounds. It will help to keep the flys off the wound and also help the healing. Ask your vet for some Silver Spray works wonders.

My friends horse took a large piece out of his shoulder the wound was quite deep. He did it in the middle of August and was out competing in October.

 
not quite the same but mine "cheese wired" a strip of her back leg about a year ago. She was stapled and stitched and the wound was redressed and debrided every 3 days for about 2 weeks. after that the stitches and stables were removed and we covered the wound in Alumininum spray as horse wouldn't let us near the leg.

once we were at the Ali spray bit we were allowed back to work, so I think in total it was about 4 weeks. The scabs took a long while to drop off though, and since there was no proud flesh or any oozing I left them to their own devices.

ETA I haven't got a picture of the scar that was left.

Due to the position of your damage it may take a little longer than what we have all experienced

Thank you , he has full bandage at moment staples and stitches should be out in few days. Vet decided to leave them fortnight for support. Fortunately he's being angel and resting . It's in funny area to heal regarding joint movement but looking better each time we change dressing. This gives me something to aim for appreciate your comments :)
