My bot has bumps all over him this morning - its like he's been bitten or had a reaction to something. Any ideas? Does anyone else get this? Ive jsut taken him on loan and his owner said he hasn't had them before that they have noticed. You can't see them very well but you can feel them when you rub your hands across him. He doesn't seem at all bothered by them.

I had a TB before that used to be covered in bumps at this time of year and they were much worse than this and I used to bath in hibiscrub and it brought them down.

Check the top of them to look for a small puncture site. If you find one it's likely fly bites. Your horse will like you massaging them gently.

The other option, in my experience, is a nettle rash. Are there any patches of nettles in your field?

Ooh Ill have a look for a puncture site.

Yes lots of nettles in the field but they have always been there although they all seem to have died off now.

Nettle rash is usually lots of bumps in roughly the same sort of area while fly bites are usually a few bumps a bit spread out over the body.

Having said that, mine currently has a load of fly bites on his tummy and no where else so he has lots of different sized bumps in roughly the same area, all with little holes early the top like stings.

That sounds a lot like fly bites.

Be careful using fly spray in those areas. I once had a fly bite on my arm, I was spraying fly repellant on my horse and some caught the wind and got my arm and it really stung when it landed on the fly bite. It explains why my horse is so jumpy when I put fly spray on him! I use the repellant gel now instead.

Ooh i'll be wary of this now, thank you. I think I will start putting him our in a fly rug as he's been out naked until now.

I can’t upload a photo of how my horse came in recently but sounds similar. Each bump had a head so assuming fly bite reaction. Does yours where a rug? Mine was out in a Aussie alrounder as fully clipped & it was almost like a fly got stuck up there & just kept biting him. Your one does sound more spread out than what my horse had though. I gave him some piriton but not sure it did much tbh.
