Hi all im a newbie and was looking for some advice, I have a 16yr old clydesdale X who at the moment is riding very well and has no major issues, although she has lost weight and after increasing her feed im thinking its time to feed her better feed as some chaff and some hi fibre nuts just arent doing it for her anymore.

Feel like a bad mummy at the moment tbh as she is going well and some people say she looks well others say she is too skinny,

You can feel her ribs and see her ribs her neck seems ok but her bum looks rather dipped.

What would you recommend i feed her to increase a weight gain? Have just bought Soya oil and some Alfa Oil to replace the mollichaf. I think due to her age etc she just isnt maintaining her weight as well as she did before and think now is the right time to just add some more weight to her!

Anyone else had any experience with an underweight horse?

Thanks in advance

Condition score her, first and foremost - if some people say she looks well, I would want to be certain that she needs to put weight on first.

Failing that, good quality haylage, ad lib and the grass is coming through which will help too :)

I'd agree with this - and the above post.

I find that the majority of horse owners keep their horses far too fat, and think that horses that are in perfect condition are thin. Don't worry too much.

Maybe stick a photo up here?

All of mine i can feel their ribs and see a shimmer when they are working and thats how i like them. People keep horses on a very unhealthy diet these days (it's one of my pet peeves when i see horses being fed needlessly)
