So tonight I free schooled my mare. Put out some trotting poles and the madam decided it is much more fun to jump them!
She was being a bit of a loon and decided that it was too much fun to stop and went over them again a few times and the last time she clipped the last one with the back of her hoof. She didn't even seem to notice so I got her to go over again just incase she had any worries about going over them again after catching her foot and to avoid any future jumping worries!
All fine, walked her off for 10 minutes around the woods with no worries.
When I got back I was picking some bit eggs off of her legs which I had noticed and put my hand around her heel for support and noticed blood on my hand, had a closer look and she has ripped the chestnut thing (not too sure what you would call it??) off of the back of her foot, obviously from catching the pole earlier.

Is this a big problem? She isn't atal bothered, so just cleaned it over and smothered in cream to keep dirt out but never had this happen before so not sure if it will just grow back or not??
Any advice please?? :)

It's called an ergot and it should be fine - it's not unlike us breaking a nail down very low. If it's bleeding, keep the flies off and treat as any other wound. It may grow back or it may not but she doesn't need it so don't worry!

We have a xc ride on the 18th so fingers crossed all is ok! :)
I didn't think it would be a huge thing and have treated it as any other flesh wound! Thought I would smother it in cream to keep the dirt out if anything!
Will check all is ok tomorrow, thanks everyone :)

It should be fine by the 18th easily :) Once it has dried up and scabbed it'll be ok!

My mare kicked most of her chestnut off one day and I just carefully cut it off as close to the skin as I could. It was too dirty to have stitched back. That was fine inside a week, and incidentally it did grow back!
