Thats pretty scary, I do have public liability insurance for riding on the roads, but with the carry on of drivers lately I'm very reluctant to hack out on roads much more. I've had some very close calls..

I hope the rider recovers ok, and the motorcyclist is taken to task, how could he not see the horse?

It's very sad .
I hope both riders recover well and the m/c get prosecuted by the police for dangerous driving or riding or what ever they call it .

What a terrible thing to happen. Hope the rider makes a speedy and full recovery, and that there are plenty of sympathetic and lovely people to support her while she recovers and copes with her injuries and the loss of her horse.

I don't understand why that thread was started on a m/c forum! Far better to ask on a horse forum. If the horse/rider has just p/l cover, it sounds as if it is likely to be through BHS, so even better to ask their advice. A lot of people have insurance cover that they don't think about, through their house insurance or union membership, or membership of any one of a number of organisations.
It sounds like a horrible incident for all involved but it surprises me somewhat, local bikers are always very careful around horses.

Glad to see a HHOer has commented with some facts!

My horse insurance covers my horse if someone else is riding with my permission, so perhaps someone who is a member of this forum could encourage the OP to check this out on their own insurance.

Horrific accident.

Terrible situation to be in. The horse rider/owner needs to contact the Police (101) quoting the Police Incident reference number and ask for the Traffic Police(man) who was on duty at the time to call the horse owner for the other parties details for insurance purposes. I had to contact the Police (without Incident no) when a refuse lorry hit a brick wall and security gates causing damages to property exceeding £15K.

It sounds like horse and rider are insured separately as the rider doesn't own the horse. Owner of the horse should claim through her insurance for the horse, and rider on her insurance for personal injury.

I thought if someone was hit from behind, it was always the fault of the person who didnt stop in time, in this case the motorcyclist, and therefore their insurance would pay any claim?

if a motorbike rider went into the back of my car i would expect my insurance to fight to get the motorcyclist insurance to pay. surely its the same for horse and rider? if not it bloomin well should be!!!!!!

The only insurance I read about was p/l, which I assume is the owner's insurance which covers the horse. It will not be needed in this case, as the m/c was at fault, she didn't stop in time and ran into the back of the horse. The rider of the horse will be able to claim for all losses against the m/c, with or without their own insurance. Admittedly it is easier to just notify your own ins co and let them deal with the case but there are plenty of solicitors who will sort it out for you and include their costs as part of the claim.

I am very sorry to hear of this accident and hope that the horse rider makes a full and speedy recovery.
Unfortunately it is not possible to post on piston heads for 14 days from registration with the web site so if my reply could be posted by someone that is able to reply to it I would obliged.
Please can the person that posted this on Pistonheads be asked to report this incident on the www.horseaccidents.org.uk web site.
All horse riders are advised to have third party public liability insurance to no less that £10,000,000 (Ten million pounds). (As indicated by the Mirvahedy vs Henley case in 2003).
Check your insurance policy so as to ensure that it is to this level as many policies do not cover to this level.
Once the police (DPP) have decided to prosecute or not to prosecute the owner of the horse should take a private civil action against the rider of the motorcycle.
