Hiya... wondering if anybody has a clue as to the problem or advise please...

My 2yr old colt stayed out for the night in the nice weather we had, he was fine when i left him and when i went back in the morning he was stood at the far side and didn't come wich i thought was odd so i went to him stroked him and it wasn't till he went to walk i noticed how lame he was, huge knee and wasn't bending it, i brought him straight in rang vet and hosed it well i was waiting.
The vet looked said either an infection or brake/chipped bone wich if it was he'd have to go Oakham for surgery, he gave him painkiller and antibiotic/anti inflamatory injection said swelling to big for xray just yet that night his whole leg to the armpit down to the pastern was like a tree stump no shape and 3/4 times bigger then it should be it even got that big an old scab burst open and was letting the fluid drain, same injections next day and it had slightly gone down the next day and they xrayed... xray showed nothing obviouse to our surprize, hes now been on bute twice a day and antibiotic for a week and the swelling is nearly normal now except for swelling around the knee still but he is just as lame as the day he came in even with the bute & i can't help but think they are missing somthing else... i wouldn't expect him just be this lame still after swelling gone and treatment etc, am i expecting to much for him to be a little sounder now or do you agree something else is going on??
Sorry for the SA just thought it'd be easyer to get whole story out lol... Thanks :)

no haven't tapped the joint only done what was said in post... spoke to vet and he just said carry on with bute and antibiotics :( he coming back next week... id love another vet but not sure if insurance would pay 2 vets??? iv heard E&L don't pay best of times

Eeek E&L :(

Personally i would joint tap, i had this all last year with my yearling, box rest was the only answer!

Now the swelling has almost vanished I'd ask for another set of x-rays to be done. Just ring them and make an appointment - you don't need another vet.

More x rays happened to me too. Pretty much same situation with my mare except she was sound after a few days bute. Bought in from field hopping. X rays same day nothing showed. X rays 6 weeks later fractured knee :( swelling hid it well. Pony retired at just turned 8.

E&L paid out brilliantly for my lami.......so I think I got lucky that time. But I have heard they have new management might be improving.

yeah he needs a joint tap as you have no idea what the infection is like-my guess is your vet is not able to do this and too proud to refer - I'd get a second opinion at a specialist. And does it matter if insurance will pay? They will pay if referral is made, so you can ring your vet and ask for that as he's no better.
