Have got a hunter on loan who I want to insure for vets fees whilst I have him. Asked his owner for his passport and she says he doesn't have one. Can I get insurance without it?

They have had him for years and I think haven't bothered to get him a passport because they will never sell him.

Not sure whether you can get insurance or not without one, you maybe able to, best thing is to phone a company and ask, but with regard to not having a passport, do you never intend on taking the horse anywhere?? If you do he will need a passport in order to be moved.

No I think the owner has to do it, maybe wrong there, but the owners details need to be on it, if you are planning on hunting him, then you will need a passport to transport him, so speak to the owners and see how you want to do it. As you'll be applying for a new passport he will also need to be microchipped.

 I've never been asked to provide a passport for insurance purposes, in fact the only time my horses' passports are needed is when we compete at RC events and that's only to confirm their 'flu and tet is up to date. ;)

you "should" have a passport to get horse insurance however ive just renewed my horse insurance with NFU. They asked for my passport numbers and i didnt have them to hand, so they just said its ok, but if i need to make a claim they will require them.

A lot of insurers ask for the passport number now. The other thing is that you can get a heavy fine if there is a spot check on passports at your yard....and yes they do happen sometimes. Please sort this out with the owner without delay so you don't risk the chance of an enormous fine.
