Following my recent post about NFU putting up my premiums by 50% after a claim the policy has become stupidly priced!

I obv wont touch e&l but want to know who others are insured with and if they are difficult in the event of another claim.

I know this injury is now excluded and i will have to tell my new ins provider about it but i want peoples experiences on other insurance comapnies so i can start to ring around before my current policy is renamed on the 13th april.

Any help appreciated

Try four counties, that's who i am with. Although go elsewhere with brakedown cover, they are quite expensive.

Stay away from barry grainger, they messed me around when i broke down with my brakedown cover.

Insurance premiums for all companies have risen this year. My horse is also with NFU and whilst he is 17 years old I have never had a claim for him in the 13 years I have owned him.

Including my trailer (value £2000) NFU wanted £490 for the year - horse insured for £1000. I have called around and SEIB & KBIS were even more expensive. I am thinking of moving to Petplan's veteran policy but even still the price is similar (I am thinking of changing so I can keep my horse insured for illness and injury after his 20th birthday).

This year with petplan I would save about £40 but this is because they give new customers 1 month free if you quote online. I am waiting for my petplan quote to arrive in the post so I can compare it with my renewal from NFU in terms of cover offered...

I've been calling round today after my policy came up for renewal.

For G and a £3900 trailer SEIB want £710 - thats after 2 discounts. I've never claimed but I get the feeling they won't reduce the costs further having given me a second discount last time it came up for renewal.

I've called NFU (who i'm currently leaning towards), KBIS, Shearwater and Petplan (PP were most expensive - £600+ without the trailer and i've since read some not-so-good reviews) .

I have claimed many times with Petplan and it has always been very straightforward with no quibbles and very quick, which is exactly how you want a claim to proceed when you are stressed out with an injured horse. They are also very helpful and sympathetic on the phone. I have now got a string of exclusions but that's to be expected. I would have no hesitation in recommending Petplan if you want to be confident of a payout when the worst should happen.

They will pay the full cost of MRI on a vet's referral, however they do not pay for transportation costs. On these two points they differ from NFU who will pay 50% for MRI but they do cover transport to the vet.

Hi Claire!!!!
I had Cleo insured with SEIB. She had a big claim and at renewal, the premium didn't go up any more than normal. There were of course exclusions put on (as expected) and they were a pleasure to deal with. My only criticism is that they don't cover transport and pay out 50% towards livery at vet school, whereas others may cover more than this.
Anton was with NFU, never had to claim. I have Tommy with Scottish Equestrian Insurance, who are underwitten by the same company as petplan. They were cheapest - but also a very good level of cover and low excess. Really nice to deal with and I know some people who have claimed all have had good experiences.
