Hi

I have 3 horses all insured with NFU who i have been with for years. However, am seriously considering a change solely due to the price as i have always found them to be helpful when making a claim. The cost has recently increased from £120 to £147 per month which i think is a little expensive. What do other folk think and do you have any recommendations?

Nfu are not the cheapest. I moved to carriage house who have been great and no problems paying out. Only thing is that cheaper premium means my vets fees are £3000 not £5000 like with nfu! It's very easy to rack up a vet bill and max out on insurance.

So be very careful when getting quotes elsewhere as the cover may not be as good as with nfu.

I was with NFU for years (prob about 15) and was getting really expensive. I still have my 20yrs old with them but they have seriously reduced his cover. When I asked for quote for my filly to cover vet fees and third party liability only it was over £1k. So I insured her through KBIS.

I'm with petplan but will get quotes from kbis and seib at renewal time.

I've had all of mine with pp but I did register a new one with nfu as a girl I was friends with at the time worked there. They were really expensive and a nightmare to deal with. Their advertised small business, personal touch, etc was no use when the person handling your claim went on leave. They were slow, inefficient, expensive and not at all "slick". I could go on but needless to say I wouldn't recommend them never mind at their ott rates

horse-insurance.co.uk £21 per month i think 3k vets bills, the shetlands have 3rd party through the same and they are £2.84 per month each. mothers connemara cross is about £18 per month.
cover seems adequate and not best or worst

I'm with petplan, just under £50 a month for 5k vet fees, tack, liability, rider insurance for my eventer and I. I don't have him insured for what he's worth though - ultimately I know that I tend to pts before the point the insurance pays out for loss so I don't insure for full worth for loss - vet fees and disposal mainly!!

NFU are ridiculously expensive IMO. I was with them for years, never claimed, and they just kept putting mine up every renewal until it got stupid so I changed to SEIB. I then had to claim shortly after (darn it, wish I could have claimed with NFU as I'd spent a fortune with them!). SEIB were brilliant I have to say, great all the way through my claim for vets fees over a year and then finally loss of use - they never complained about anything. Their final loss of use figure they gave me was a tad low I wrote back saying why I thought so and they agreed and put it up to what I'd said :) They're really understanding horsey folk it seems. I no longer insure any of mine currently (mine are all bust so no point!) but I would definately use them again.

NFU wanted I think £175 a month for insuring my horse which I finally objected to, SEIB was £95 ;) That was for vets fees, loss of use and loss of horse. I ended up claiming about £13k from them in the end.

Thanks. NFU have put mine up to around £145 a month (up £25 since last year) and cant see why they keep hiking it up. I know a lot of people who have given up on insuring their horses altogether because of these silly prices. However, im too scared to go down that road as if i did something would happen for sure ! Have been quoted around £65 per month from SEIS for all 3 although as one is now 17 they wont insure him for illness. Think i may go with this or alternatively insure the older boy with someone else that will cover illness. Also know some folk who are members of BHS which provides personal accident and public liability to its members.

I've heard through loads of people that NFU dont want to do horse insurance anymore hence they keep hiking their prices up every year (even with their silly "loyalty discount" which doesn't exist!). SEIB definately give them a go. Dont think many (if any) insure for vets fees on a horse older than 17?

Petplan does. Up to age 25, as long as the horse in insured before it's 20th birthday and there is no break in cover. Up to 5k cover.

NFU currently insure him for vets fees although would expect this given the amount they charge. There are also quite a few who do specialist mature horse policies - think you just pay a higher excess yourself on these tho. Just back from HOYS and was speaking to BHS lady there so def gonna join to save a bit on public liability and accident.
