If I have a new horse coming I am going to need new insurance.

I was previously with E&L who actually paid out well but I had a 17.5% excess on my vet cover :( (didnt realise this when I took out the policy)

Have been looking at other insurers today but would like to hear first hand stories.

Who do you insure with, and why did you choose them?

KBIS, they are fantastic always paid out straight away no questions asked & will work direct with my vet. Highly recommend :)

Scottish equestrian - £135 excess and always paid very promptly

SEIS have this term you have to agree to (as does petplan -

"You, or anyone who rides the horse, does not suffer from a physical or mental illness or disability"

This means I cant insure with them because of mental illness. That's ridiculous and makes no sense!

Phone them and discuss it with them ;)

HOLY HELL!

Here's me thinking the £45 a month I have had quoted was high :D

I know it doesnt half seem alot to me! My dad is in charge of it while I am at uni so dreading that bill each month when I leave.

I guess being insured for full worth and LOU is expensive though but as the insurance wouldnt pay loss last time and we lost 8.5k (thats what we paid for the horse but he would have been worth around 12-15k if I sold him) we decided LOU was a must this time!

BHS Gold for 3rd party liability, having had too many poor expreiences with various insurance companies, with exclusions and refusals to pay out for losses. LOU can be tricky, depending on the class of use you have opted for and pts on humane grounds is almost impossible to get unless the horse is literally at death's door.

Petplan for me - gives me, and importantly my vet, confidence because we know they'll pay out on genuine claims with no fuss.

Costs me £27 a month but only valued at 2.5k, went for the higher excess of £500 and no LOU

I am with KBIS but opted out of the payment for mortality and it went down a lot. I thought that if something awful happened to him, he is not worth a great deal financially, and nothing could compensate emotionally.

It is being stuck with huge vet's bills that worried me, and third party, so that is what I insured for.

I just want Vet fees upto £5k and public liability but I am still getting quotes of £56 :(

With SEIB and have found them excellent - they paid out no problem at all last year when my mare was very ill. Paid within about 2 weeks of getting the forms and really easy to deal with

mine are no longer insured, But if I did it would be SEIB.

I'm with Petplan as I heard so many good things about them when I was insurance-hunting, and they were lovely and easy to deal with on the phone. Fingers crossed I haven't had to / won't have to use them! Previously used NFU with my loan horse, but was quite pricey compared to petplan so went with them instead.

Scottish equestrian. No probs with payout and prompt payment to vets for his hock treatment. Got £3k fees and £120 excess all for about £30 a month. There are other bits on there too.
