As title says really :), works really well 90% of the time but 10% of it he draws back his tongue, currently in straight bar happy mouth loose ring to originally get him to take a contact, now taking contact and much happier in mouth generally but taking back tongue now so was thinking possibly myler? any ideas, much appreciated!!
any experiences even better :) thanks

Mine does this and he is in a myler comfort snaffle.

He did have tushes coming thru, he's rising 6, so we aren't sure if they were the problem, I have only ridden him a few times since they were sorted and always by myself so I'm not sure if he has stopped it know.

I would be interested too if anyone knows why they do it

Have you tried a drop noseband my mare used to do this and we changed to a straight bar happy mouth like you are using along with a drop and she seems much better in that combination :).

Mine does it frequently. I've been through countless bit and noseband combinations, the dentist has checked him out and I consulted our physio as well (who gave me some exercises with his tongue to do!). At the moment we're working with the Myler comfort snaffle and a drop, it's not perfect but he is reasonably happy in it. I had been riding in a bit with a tongue plate on it, but found it just a little bit sharp when I was jumping and he still tried to draw the tongue back regardless - he even draws it back in a hackamore so think I might be fighting a losing battle somehow... Just as well he's supposed to be a showjumper!

Will be interested to see other's replies to this - always looking for new ideas!

perhaps try a bit that gives more room for the tongue. A lot of horses dont like any tongue pressure, and quite often it can hurt, so they draw their tongue back to get relief. A bit with more tongue room might help as the horse wont be having as much tongue pressure. Perhaps a ported mouthpiece.

My horse used to do this. I tried a few different bits without any luck until I tried a Neue Schule. She is now in a Neue Schule full cheek tranz angled lozenge and is much better. She hardly ever draws her tongue back and my instructor thinks she has really improved.
