Now I'm suspecting pain! He has had a check ligament cut and we are towards the end of rehab and is beginning to come sound. My vets are insisting i must ride after having done all of the in hand stuff to help him heal. When i put the saddle cloth on he is grumpy and also when i put the saddle on. He also pulls faces with the girth - i am very very gentle and do it up very slowly. saddle has been checked. i have changed girths also to see if that is the problem but no difference.
I am assuming that he may have developed ulcers due to the pain of the leg or that he hasn't developed ulcers and it is just the leg pain???
Can ulcers be cleared by just using a good gut/ulcer supplement or does it always have to mean a scope and perscription meds?

I would say definitely scope!
My girl was the same, scoped her and she had grade 3 squamous and glandular! 4 weekly injections of gastroguard and scoped clear! She was found to have juvenile hock arthritis which was obviously causing the ulcers!

When was your saddle checked? Wiggy's coming back into work after year off. I ended up having to buy him a new (temporary, I hope) saddle as he had changed shape so much. I bought a second hand Wintec Wide with all the appropriate gussets. Within 3 weeks of starting work again, he went down a gullet width and 6 weeks later he's almost gone down another - we've got a front riser pad at the moment as he's on the cusp of the two. I've seen my saddler more than my friends recently! After that, the next move will be back into his normal saddle which I can't wait for as I HATE the Wintec, I just feel so insecure in it. The sign for Wig needing a change is him feeling tense when I mount. As soon as I'm on, he seems fine but it's like he's bracing himself for it to hurt.

ETA - of course I meant gullet not gusset. I hate that word too. Actually, I hate both words.

That is a good point actually - it was checked 3 months ago maybe time to get the saddler again.

Definitely check the saddle again!

But otherwise yes I’d scope and see if he has ulcers and more importantly what type so you can get the correct medication…faffing around with supplements will not be effective x
