My mare has been having a good itch but I haven't put anything on it to stop itching. I've plaited her tail and applied fly spray all over her. This has stopped any damage.
Buck has sweet itch, I have been advised to wash his mane and tail twice a week and keep a fly rug on him - he is also doused in fly spray morning and night - and so far touch wood we are coping.
mine does exactly this. only solution i have found is nettex stop itch. its a thick cream that contains teatrea so soothes any rubs and repells flies. Its a sweetitch remedy but I use it on any open wound to stop flies getting to it and to promote healing. Brilliant stuff. also only needs to be put on every couple of days as it stays on.
Benzyl doesn't have to be diluted, we used to douse Section A with it, she had bad sweet itch and within a few weeks started growing mane again, worked very well and i'd use it again.
a fly rug such as the Amigo Bug Rug isn't expensive and works wonders - my 4 yr old hasn't touched her tail this year and scrubbed it last year before i started putting stuff on it.
if you want a topical solution, Carr and Day and Martin's KillItch is wonderful stuff, well worth the money, works better than anything else i've ever found.
pig oil and sulpher is fantastic from the internet. but you have to do a skint est ona patch first, i use this ont hje feathers aswell fantastic it is a old travlers remedy
Try a good wash with Nizeral - seems to work wonders on itchy horses. You can buy it at a chemist. Dilute with warm water and lather up well right into the base of the hair.
Is it sweet itch? I assume from your username that it is, as welshies are very prone to it. My old boy had sweet itch and the best thing the vet ever told me to use was head and shoulders - much cheaper than all the horsey solutions and seemed to work better as well - wash the affected area every other day. The other thing he recommended was a solution of 80% calamine, 15%, benzyl benzoate and 5% methylated spirit, applied liberally once a day. This will work for general itchiness as well as sweet itch. You can never make sweet itch go away but this did seem to ease it more than anything else. The only other thing to do is to keep her covered in a rug so the flies can't get to her. Feeding garlic or marmite can also help keep flies away and horses love marmite - some people think that garlic can cause itchiness in some horses though, although it's never been proven, so marmite's probably a better bet just in case.
Tocha used to rub the top of her tail when I bought her last year with manky skin
I used to put a big dollop of aloe vera jelly on her dock where she rubbed, and rub it in right down to the skin, twice a day. Seemed to do the trick and soothe the itching.
My horse has been doing the same and had left it all scabby, so i gave it a good wash with diluted hibi scrub, then once it dried sprayed it with purple spray with added aloe vera. It stopped the itching straight away, scabs cleared up within a couple of days and now i just give it a quick spray with fly repellant and he's been fine since.
Depends on what is causing the itching. Do you think it is sweeticth? If so, I can personally recommend
a/ benzyl benzoate - not diluted, apply daily
or
b/nettex itch stop solve

c/a fly sheet.
