Had a narrow escape when my chestnut horse, Pip, jumped/crashed through his post and rail fence

and fell in a drainage ditch on the other side. My long suffering vet father checked him over and gave him a shot of antibiotics in the bum (which Pip secretly enjoyed..) but otherwise he appears to have got off lightly with a few scrapes and one or two superficial cuts. He isn't lame at all and he's not really stiff but he is VERY grouchy when I try to examine the cuts on his gaskins. He has had 3 days of bute and is not swollen up and I can find no sign of infection but I was wondering whether anyone else has any experience of this.

Is it normal for him to be so tender around his scrapes? He is a lovely saintly horse to do but is kicking gently to let me know it hurts. Dad said that gaskin injuries can be very painful but I wondered if anyone could give me any advice as to how long he's likely to be sore for? Poor old boy is very special to me - I just want to make him as comfortable as possible.

The other thing that's concerning me is that he normally rolls for Britain - and he's been turned out during the day since Friday (when the accident happened) but he hasn't rolled once. Admittedly, the field is totally underwater (I'm not joking, the fens have flooded big time) but I am concerned that he's too sore to get down and enjoy the mud.. Thoughts?

I suspect he is feeling rather sore still. The scrapes will heal given time - think how long that sort of injury would take to stop feeling sore if you had it.

I would be looking for a chiropracter/physio to have a look at him, he has probably pulled himself about a bit. Paul Darrington is your way and is good.

he will not be rolling coz he his to sore. give him some arnica to help bring out the bruiseing that is probally why he is tender you know what it is like when you have a bruise your self and touch it. keep on cleaning the wounds as much as poss try giving him some food whilst you clean them to try and take his mind of what you are doing. try and do some gentle streches with him aswell in case he hes pulled some thing aswell!

Hope your horse is better soon. I wish I had a vet Dad although my Dad is totally wicked and mucks out for me every day and turns my big lad out. I am very lucky.

Can you give him some bute for his pain?

Can beat yours!
my horse jumped through a post and rail fence, through my friends windscreen of her car!!!!!!!
How the hell he survived is beyond me (and everyone else)! and more to the point how I survived is beyond me as my heart just stopped!
But same results, scrapes and scratches (he had some deep ones too! but not many, somehow!)
He will be flinching, grumpy, kicking etc cause it will hurt like hell! like imagine when you get a small cut and go oo its sore, and some annoying person goes HA does it hurt if i press it! (then jabs it!) even though you aren't jabbing him, just feeling, it still hurts!!!
I wouldnt be worried about him not rolling! (would you want to on sore cuts?!) he will get better he will just need time,
Arnica might not be a bad idea!
Pain killers will prob help if it is serious pain, but if not then just TLC will do the job for now!
if it is getting worse SUPERDAD should be able to advise!
Hope he gets better!

Thanks for the advice, everyone! I try to keep my dad-abuse to a minimum because he is retired now and keep threatening to charge me private rates... Luckily I know the magic words "old people's home"...
