I’ve owned my boy 5 years so know him pretty well. For the past couple of months he’s just not “felt” the same to ride. No obvious lameness , had dentist , physio etc.

Anyhow he then started throwing the occasional buck, which he’s never done and although willing his trot didn’t feel as floaty/forward as it did. 2 weeks ago I cantered in school and it felt very odd so got off and watched him canter from ground, disaster. He struggled to maintain and go into it and hinds looked a mess. Stopped riding booked my vet physio who had only been out mid March and she said he was very sore in stifles/back but after treatment was fine. She suggested that either a) he’s taken a tumble in the field or b) could be hock arthritis as that can ricochet up to stifle pain. Vet booked for Friday with X-ray machine and scanner.

I’m quite anxious about it and will do whatever is best for him, but has anyone had anything similar ? And If indeed is hock arthritis did treatment mean they could return to themselves ? We are not competition riders just enjoy low level hacking /lessons and Teeny jumps.

He is not lame in walk and trot just not him.

Yes there are a lot of horses around working very happily with arthritic hocks treated with steroids and/or arthramid. But if you do find hock issues please have the suspensories scanned as well, because so many people have gone through hock treatment only to find that the suspensories have been compromised by the sore hocks and need rest and/or treatment as well.

I'm a bit confused though, if the horse has sore stifles why she isn't including the possibly that he has a problem with his stifles. I don't think you can come to any conclusions until your vet has seen him, but hocks are a very common issue and I hope you get good news for something very treatable.

They're such a worry, aren't they?

She hasn’t ruled it out as such , plus won’t know till xrayed. I think as after treatment stifles were back to normal. Vet will decide what needs scanning/xrays but I may need to be insistent as he’s not like you’d look and say “he’s lame” he’s just not himself. I’ve been saying for a few weeks “is he lame” and think everyone thinks I’ve cracked up but I just know he doesn’t feel himself.

Your an experienced member maybe you could have a nosey at videos for me, pretty please….

He did have a hard early life being driven from a 2 year old but he leads a pretty leisurely life now. They are a worry as we were really getting somewhere with weight loss regime 🙈

Sure, send me the pointers. I know where you are coming from, I spent 3 years trying to convince different vets that Ludo wasn't "right", but they didn't find it until they could see him lame and nerve block it.

I'll cross my fingers for arthritic hocks for you, they are very treatable these days.

This was how one of ours with hind suspensory issues present . He also has SI problems due to the suspensory issue

I’m pretty lucky with our vet she’s great, I’m sure I’ll get some answers and hopefully be back to his usual self pronto. I’ve been very lucky that he has never had an off day till now, and it’s just off , not a total disaster. I however don’t know what to do with life without riding 🙈

Keep him moving, you don't want to rest arthritic hocks. Lots of in hand, I'd also hack at walk on straight lines to have the vet see him in his "normal" state. He isn't outright lame, he's just, as you say, "not quite right".
