hi,

My horse has had colic three times in 3 months and it happens everytime i turn her out for the night?

she has been wormed etc..

she had an operation on her tendon in september, the vet came out two days ago and told me that she will never be sound as the tendon has ripped even more, so said to just turn her out and not stable her at night so decided to turn her out in a small paddock with not much grass and with hay and i go down in the morn and she is showing signs of colic, ranges from just signs of colic to rolling around get the vet out colic..

what could this be? Its really worrying me as I have no idea what I can do other than to just keep stabling her at night but she is stabled on her own as all the other horses go out?

any suggestions?

she doesnt seem to stressed.. no other symtoms except from normal colic symptoms when left out?

I was thinking ulcers but surely being out 24/7 is better for ulcers?

Yes 24/7 turnout is best for the ulcer prone horse, but if she has ulcers then until they are treated they will not go away and she will colic when under any stress conditions. Could she have a companion in with her?
My advice would be to get a supplement like Coligone or Feedmarks Settlex, that have good reviews and see if these keep her colic free. Your vet should be able to advise about getting her scoped if this continues. The scoping is inexpensive enough - it's the treatment that is the big cost. Good Luck!

She may have been wormed but has she been tested (bloods) for tapeworm?

My horse had been wormed regularly and had a low worm count but displayed similar symptoms to yours - out of the blue regular colic - did endless tests and found nothing, but then tapeworm bloods showed high levels and since being double dosed touch wood no colic since!

She didnt show any obvious symptoms apart from colic, was fit, healthy and competing, so they are not always skin and bone with tapeworm... may be worth an investigation?

I would also recommend getting your horse tested for tape worm. My mare has always been wormed regularly, had never displayed any collic symptoms before, but went down with extreme collic one evening, turns out she had extreme tape worm and took 5 dosages of wormers to clear it. Also sounds like ulcers so maybe get her scoped too.

yep ruled out all plants /weed/feed etc I am the only one that feeds her and she is on chaff and calm and condition..

yeah true, may be worht getting tested for tape worm, spoke to my vet and he said to give 5 day pancuar for red worm incase its that, although colic is the only symptom shown it must be worth a go..

thanks for your suggestions
