My 14yo TB has been making a weird noise these past few days and I have no idea what it is and if it needs vet treatment.
I will try my best to describe it, basically it sounds like windsucking but it's not, it's like a cough sort of noise, but he's doing it inwards, sort of a hiccup sound and he does this everytime he lifts his head up quickly and if you touch his nose, underneath of his neck , or behind his ears - he will do it.
He seems to stop with exercise, and he only really done it when i started tacking him up (which is when he starts throwing his head around)
Does anyone know what this may be? :(

You say it isn't windsucking but it sounds very much like that to me. Wonder if he might have ulcers if this starts when you tack him up? What is he like having rugs on, his sides touched, his girth tightened? Other than that the only thing I can think of is whether he may have put his poll out and is reacting with anything near his head?

I wonder if he is grunting because he is in pain in those places?

I would be getting the vet out personally as it is a definite change in his behaviour.

Sounds like he has 'choke' to me, I would get the vet out to check if it has been a few days and he hasn't cleared the blockage!

My immediate thought was ulcers, but he's fine to rug up, brushing his belly etc, he throws his head a bit when doing his girth up, but then he always has done.
But someone also said it could just be dust up his nose from his dusty bag of shavings I got put in my bed this week :(

I thought it sounds like choke but I would be concerned if it had gone on for a few days. Choke tends to clear its self quite quickly.

Get a vet or someone very experianced (who has experiance of choke windsucking etc.) to have a look for you

I have changed his diet but it was a good few months ago, how long would it take for it to take effect on him?
Do you have an idea of how much it would cost to get him scoped?

Best to speak with your vet just to be on the safe side, have no idea how much a scope would cost you, I do know that the horse can be scoped on the yard rather than travel to the vet. In the mean time make sure your horse is getting plenty of fibre in the diet/ad lib forage.
