Horse keeps pushing boundaries!!

I have a horse that's 6 rising 7 and every few months he gets really rude and pushes the boundaries. I am really strict with him at all times but when these moments happen I have to get my instructor to help and get him back on track! I don't know what I can do to stop this happening in the first place.? I do lots of groundwork etc and really do work hard every day with all little things- it's a bit soul destroying! Is it an age thing?? Any advice welcome

Its a combination of things, starts stupidly spooking, can't get any connection with him when ridden, constantly distracted and just generally being a bit yobish and full of it!

He sounds exactly like my cob of the same age. With her, it's much worse in winter when she's desperate for some greenery. She turns into a complete thug. She's having some professional schooling starting today so I'll let you know if I learn any pearls of wisdom!
