Well today we were transporting sheep for a girl that helps with our horses and on the way back with a husband and wife sheep i get a phonecall from yard owner that horses have escaped in with each other (This happens every couple of days as only using electric fencing and her horses run through it) and she explains that Samira (Our 6 year old Lippizaner) has a swollen eye (left) and that it was weeping. She carrys on about how its definetly not a kick but she poked herself in the eye with a stick. Anyway drop sheepies off and go up to yard to check it out and no stick can cause as much swelling as she has got. I have come to the conclusion she was kicked as 2 of the 4 esacped horses kick and Samira is prone to being kicked (Once on hock, Once on knee and feltlock - which caused 5 months box rest! - Once on other knee, Once on inside hind leg and now eye!). Her upper eyelid is swollen into a golf ball size and is weeping quite alote. She can open her eye slightly but prefers to have it closed. Rang vet and he said he wouldnt be able to do anything till swelling goes down so wait till morning for him to come check it out. Just wondering if anyone has had any experiences with problems with the eye?

Thanks
Lucy x

put some cold teabags on to reduce the swelling, keep bathing it in warm water until the swelling goes down and then give vet another call. Hope she gets better soon xx

Poor girly! :(

Is there nothing you can do with the fencing or turnout? I'd be concerned if I knew another horse was likely to break the fencing and injure mine. Are all the previous kicks from the same horse?

While you wait for your vet's advice, whatever you do, don't put ANYTHING in, on or near the horse's eye that you wouldn't happily put in, on or near your own injured eye. You could make a bad situation worse. Another thing to be wary of is putting creams or drops into a horse's eye. I'd be wary about putting drops into a kitten's eye, never mind 1000lbs of anxious horse. One jerk at the wrong time and you can penetrate the cornea with the (always) sharp end of the medication tube. Creams: apply it to the end of a clean finger and squash you finger into the eye. You can do this single handed. Drops: pull the bottom eyelid out so it makes a little pouch. Then hold the tube/bottle PARALLEL to the eye (not 90 degrees) and dribble the drops into the pouch. You will probably need help with this, depends on the horse. Hope it's not too bad news. PM me if you need more info should the injury be bad.

Didnt touch it over night to let swelling go down and everything seems fine (Fingers crossed!). She seems to be happy enough, i'll keep an eye on it over the next few days :)
