Hi, I have noticed my horse has started kicking out after going to the toilet in his stable. I wondered if it was just that he does not like the dripping that can happen afterwards. Today he was quite excited and went to the toilet four times in an hour as there were horse going in and out whilst he was in his stable. I saw him kick out after each occasion. I cannot see any problems from the outside. Does anyone have experience of this. He went to the toilet in the field before he was brought in and I did not see him kick out on that occasion. I will speak to the vet this has been happening for a few weeks. He seems fine and comfortable in every other way so not colic related. If anyone has experienced this before then I would be grateful for your findings. Thankyou

I don't know the answer to this but my horse does it regularly. I have assumed its because he gets some sort of spasm and it hurts him. Sometimes after passing droppings he will march at speed right round the box as if he wants to run away from the pain. When its really bad the droppings become very loose. Can't help thinking its a mild sign of some sort of colic and stress. I would be interested to hear what the vet says.

I understood this happens when they are a little 'loose' and they stamp/kick out because they have a sore bum and it's stinging
when they poo! Either give a probiotic supplement (some people say human probiotic yogurt works too!) or some bran in their feed.

Hi thanks for Your advice everyone! I have held off calling the vet for now and am trying the probiotics and cleaning first as he did used to be on probiotics before I had him so may be a link! Thanks :)

Yes its quite common. Too much rich grass upsets the stomach. Then the horse kicks out whilst passing poo as he is getting stomach cramps. Put on pink powder and keep on daily. Cheap and very effective.
