I have been told by a friend that a horse was killed this morning in Elborough (close to Smart Horseboxes), just outside Weston-s-Mare. This about two miles from where we keep our two.

Apparently they were hit from behind by a driver who was blinded by the low sun. The horse died within minutes and the rider was taken to hospital, we believe she has whiplash, but no other injuries.

What can I say, give your loved ones an extra hug and be aware that this spell of good weather brings it's own dangers.

such a shame
my deepest sympathies to the rider and all connections
when you hear of tradgedies it always make me think of how lucky i am for the simple things, especially when the rider is my age and its in my neck of the woods (sort of)

This is further along the road we use to get to the nearest off road riding in our area.

I'm afraid way too many people use Elbobough and Hutton as a short cut from one side of W-s-M to the other. They seem to think it is a main road, not a 30 mph B road, and they use it to avoid the traffic that builds up on the dual carriageway.

Perhaps NOW the Local Council will listen to the local residents, who have been asking for warning signs and speed bumps for YEARS!

As it happens, the Councillor in charge of Highways happens to represent the Ward where this accident happened. I shall be e-mailing him tonight.

The horse was called Chas, RIP

what terribly sad news, poor girl how traumatic.

but on a more serious when are drivers gona learn to drive more carefully, and when are the relevant authorities gona look at opening more bridleways so we arent on roads so much

I have also replied on Latest News.

For 20 years I drove 1,000 miles a week all over the UK for my job.

If I was blinded by sun, lights on full beam I used to SLOW DOWN. It was never a problem and i have never received a speeding ticket.

Horse riders get little justice and support from the British legal system. Shocking

NeilM is that the road from on the left after banwell/knightcott that goes through to hutton? I think thats where smart horseboxes are.

If so it is a horrible road very much used as a rat run in my limited experience but also tight and bendy with large hedges on either side and in my head its a 40mph but I don't go up there very often.

huge sympathies to the rider involved.

Sympathies for the driver also.
I nearly hit a bloke in the horsebox once because of sun. Was going up a hill and had slowed down because I was blinded, caught site of a tractor parked on the other side of the road (had something behind it and couldn't tell how far out into the road it stuck), so slowed down even more. Next thing I know a bloke was diving out of the way onto the verge, turned out they were stopping the traffic to move sheep.
Bloke tried to go mad at me, when I told him it was half his fault for not thinking of things like that int he first place he soon backed down. Things could ahve turned out very different.

assume driver was driving towards elborough as that road does pretty much run west-east

and it was very bright this morning.

I assume it is pretty well used by horse riders to get up to the hill from hutton as have hacked out with a friend from the village, hutton has very good speed controls in place but not if you are coming from the other way.

Just got back from a quick evening hack and saw another rider in the village.

Ester, yes the road is the turning on the left just after the motorway bridge, as you are heading from Banwell to W-s-M. It is both 30 and 40 mph and a short stretch may even be 60 mph, but the section where the accident happened is 30 mph

There were two girls and they were riding from Elborough back towards Smart Horseboxes, where they livery. The car was heading AWAY from the rising sun and hit the horse from behind, with considerable force (don't need to go into any more detail) such that the rider was thrown off.

I am going to suggest to the Chair of my RC that all the local RC's and PC's lobby the Local Councils for some of the local footpaths to be upgraded to Bridleway, this could reduce the equine traffic through the village and on that road to almost nothing. This could at least be something positive which comes from such a tragedy.
