Hi, my gelding went lame a couple of weeks ago, he could barley walk and was trying not to put his heel to the floor on his front leg. The next day he was fine and I thought maybe he'd just twinged something, but then he went lame again. I called the vet and she said get the farrier out, farrier found a deep hole with a but of muck quite high up so dug it out and tried to put a poultice on, he managed to keep one on for two days and after that I kept a field boot on and tried to keep it clean.
Farrier came back out yesterday and said hole had healed up ok and he looked nearly sound, and put a shoe back on. today he can barley walk again, again trying not to put his heel to the ground :(
Any ideas what it could be?
I'm going to have to get the vet back out I know but I'm worried it's something serious.

The farrier said he couldn't find an abscess, just a deep hole which he cleaned out. It's just odd that he's gone really lame again now he's got a shoe back on

I had the same thing happen to me and shoe had to be taken off again. Can you poultice again? Some people say turn out without digging for the abscess and the pressure of their movement will bring it to the surface and burst? I've never done it this way though have always had the abscess dug out.How are you treating him at present?

Well the shoe was only put back on Friday afternoon and the farrier said he couldnt see anything and that he looked ok. He only went lame yesterday and this is a horse that won't stay in, he jumps out of stables or the small yard area wether he's lame or not! So he's out in the field.
Before the farrier came out the first time he would be really lame one day and fine the next, hence why the vet thought lt may be a abscess. This has been going on for weeks now though, I thought an abscess would of shown by now?

Still sounds like an abscess which hasn't finished draining. Shoe off, poultice and put a boot over it and turn him out to burst it himself.

Sounds like a very deep seated abscess that you have not got to the bottom of - either the vet or your farrier needs to go digging! Have you got a pulse?

Also my horses first abcess showed initially as intermittent lameness (before he eventually went dog lame and I thought he had broken a bone) After it had initially drained it became reinfected around the nail holes when the shoe was put on again this time he was only slightly lame in trot. I've now decided to not bother with back shoes. Abscesses are dreadfull things and very upsetting and frustrating for us and awful for the poor neds.
