My 5 year old has a real tendency to lean on the bit to guide him around corners etc. When i hack him, i feel like he drifts off of the track if i am not guiding him forwards.

He also leans in the school, around corners especially. If i am not physically turning him with my reins(i have tried with my leg but doesnt seem to work), he literally runs straight into the fence.

Its literally getting to the point where my arms are aching after days because of the amount of 'guiding' i do for him.

I am riding him in a NS starter bit, if anyones wondering.

I am just thinking whether its a babyish issue and he will learn over time, in which case i wont worry to much :)

Thanks in advance!

When I had a little cob with no steering I placed upturned flower pots on the ground and practised weaving in and out of them in walk so she understood what I was asking her.

I also rode more with my leg guiding her than hand. I do vibrate the rein gently to indicate I would like to turn if they ignore the leg or son't understand.

You could also practice on the ground moving him over by touching his sides so he learns to move away from pressure then it will make more sense when you are in the saddle.
