Horse licking blood?????

Went to catch the pony and one of his fieldmates sustained a leg injury which meant there were a few blood patches in the field.

My pony was licking the blood.

We got them in, called vet etc. and sorted the wound at which point I got blood on my hands. Pony licked my hands clean.

WHY on earth was he doing it????

He is fed a balancer and has a salt lick in his stable.

Oh btw the horse is now fine on box rest for 2 wks :)
 
I hink it is a natural instinct to remove any scent of blood, the smell would attract predators and that would cause grief for any prey animal. Same reason some mares eat the afterbirth I think, however disgusting it seems it keeps them safer.
