Horse lorry not in regular use - what should I do with it?

Due to lack of money

I am suddenly not competing any more, so my lorry has gone from being used at least twice a week to not being used at all.

If there is one thing which drives me mad it is people who let their horse lorrys sit and rot away (it used to be a speciality of people at my old yard) then wonder why the lorry wont start and is totally bu**ered when they do want to use it.

So what should I do to keep mine ticking over? At the moment I am starting it once a week minimum, running it backwards and forwards across the yard and back to stop the brakes seizing - anything else?

Thanks

Is it lack of money just to compete - or lack of money to actually run the lorry itself?

I would have thought that just starting it up and running it for just a few minutes may do more harm than good, as you will be regularly having it run cold, without enough time to let it warm up. Could you drive it to Tesco's to do the weekly shop - or something like that?

If it is lack of money to compete - maybe take your ned out for hacks elsewhere, so you are still off out in it?

It is lack of money full stop really, but as the lorry isnt actually costing me anything at the mo (tax still current, insurance paid for the year in advance) then I am resisting selling it as long as I can

I suppose it will cost me fuel, but one run a week shouldnt be that bad

Could you not hire it out? Anything like that?

I had thought of that, but then you need 'hire and reward' insurance which is a pain

Most people at our yard already have their own transport so there isnt a market for offering to take people places... ahem... cash in hand really

I wouldn't personally lend or hire it out - no matter how bad things were TBH.

If you are anything like me - I would near enough kill someone that so much as breathed too close to my lorry!!! One day at a show someone in a neighbouring trailer had parked much too close for my liking, and they let their horse cr@p down my lorry!!!! I was soooo mad... I can just imagine what I would be like if someone else was hiring my lorry and damaged it....

If you are not using it, start it and let it run for a while every week, make sure you move it back and forward as well so the brakes don't stick on.
If you are really not going to be going out - SORN it and cash in your tax, it will cost you no more to re-tax and you will not be wasting money while it is off the road.

Oh well at least I am doing the right things with it, thanks Jane_lou

Tax runs out at the end of this month unfortunately so I cant cash it in, but will be SORNing it after that

For the time being

Hi, Ive just decided to sell mine mainly because of lack of use, had great ideas but just havent used it much and it breaks my heart to see it stood there when I go to the yard. Also I only have one horse and realistically should have looked at buying a 3.5t. Damn horse wont go in a trailer and may not go in a 3.5t either but just paid for tax, insurance and the MOT is due so decided I have to be sensible and sell.
I take mine for a run every week, sometimes on the motorway or just a quick run to keep the brakes from seizing. My friend has never had that problem and hers stands for months but she does start it up and let it run for about half an hour or so every now and again.

When you start it up weekly you really need to run it until it warms up.
