Went up to bring the girls in yesterday after only 3 hours of T/O & my OH's TB mare has received another kick to the same hind leg that was kicked before Christmas. After 2 month's box rest we have been slowly bringing her back into work this month, with limited T/O only on good ground conditions. We won't know if there is any tendon damage until we see her this morning - fingers crossed.

The mares field has been split in half with electric fencing (just one strand at about 3 foot high), so she has been seperated from the moody mare who we suspect kicked her last time. However, this same mare tried to kick another horse who was being led through the field 2 days ago & was seen kicking out at the fence yesterday before our horses went out.

Is it possible that she was kicked by this mare through the fence or is it more likely that it was from a mare from the same part of the field? I'm not trying to blame anyone, I'm just trying to understand so that I do my best to keep her out of harms way as she is very sensitive & delicate & obviously made of cheese.

It would be very easy for a horse to kick another if they are only separated with one strand of electric tape. Ideally, you need to put 3 strands up and double fence it with a 4ft gap in between.
Can you not just keep you mare in with one other that she is friends with?

Thanks Jaylen.

We had a bit of a dilema as the mares only have 1 field to share & there are 5 horses. Rogue (OH's TB) has been sharing half the field with a lovely gentle shire x, while she has been recovering & this has worked well. However, that has meant that my mare has been put in with the moody mare & her friend - which has been a worry. A few days ago we swapped my mare to the other half of the field to be with Rogue & her new friend.

My little mare is usually very good, but is playful & has a habbit of chasing the others when she's bored or at tea time. Not usually in an agressive manner, but I know she's no angle!

However, I have been speaking to the YO this morning, as our time there has been one field accident after another. We have now been given another field to use. The plan is to move the moody mare & her friend to the new field. Leave my mare in 1 half of the original field & put Rogue & the shire cross in the other half. Hopefully this will work??

On a positive note, Rogue is walking much better this morning, so hopefully no damage to the tendon. A course of anti B's & bute, wound dressing for 3 days, stable bandages & plenty of walking according to the vet, but we are hopeful for a full recovery.

I blame OH as it always happens when he takes time off work to spend with his horse!

That's what OHs are there for - to blame! Hope the new regime works well and that the leg heals well.
